    Pioneer VSX-1022K not acting right

    I have picked up this receiver from Ebay, it wasn't tested by the seller.
    It seems like it's working, there is audio and video, but I can't get audio from rear surround back speaker(tried the test tone also and still a no go), I'm having a hard time getting into the Network settings and I can't get into the service mode.
    Every time I try to get into the Network settings, it shows Can't Select.
    Eventually when I get in there, it will show Please Wait indefinitely.
    I'm suspecting firmware error/corruption.
    After many tries, I have managed to start the firmware update, but it ran for hours and never finished.
    I have a feeling that I will have to replace the EEPROM from the PC board which it seems to be a 24C16A IC. It's next to the CPU.
    Anybody has experience with flashing and EEPROM? I have never done it before.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    First I would like to repair the functionality of the receiver and then I would deal with the amp section.
    By the way, I have removed the amp section and I did not find bad components at the final stage.

    24c16 is 2k, it's only for holding settings.

      OK, then I will have to look into the schematics.
      Before that, I will try to update the firmware, with another USB stick(older 512MB).

        Checked that all the voltages are OK?

          I haven't checked yet, because I'm suspecting a firmware went wrong situation here.

            Bad power to the EEPROM\CPU could cause bad operation too, though.

              I will measure some voltages then. Thank you for your input.
              I don't know the history of this receiver, this way it makes it much harder to figure out what it could be the problem.

                Checking voltages is the first thing you should do, unless something else is immediately obvious. It may well be that you do have an EEPROM problem, but AFAIK EEPROM problems are often caused by bad power to begin with.

                  Re: Pioneer VSX-1022K not acting right

                  I have the schematic in front of me and I'm measuring the STBY board output connector, but I don't know how much should it show.
                  This is what I'm getting:
                  CPU_ST_VCC= 7.25V
                  STBY_RLY= 3.1V
                  PDN= 0.02V
                  STBY_VCC= 7.32V
                  CPU_3.3V= 3.28V
                  FLAC= 2.36VA
                  FLCT= 10mV
                  FLAC= 2.36VA

                    jesus.
                    i'm damned sure VCC should be 5v or even 3v3

                      Do you mean the CPU_ST_VCC?
                      Soon I will get a VSX-1122K and I can compare these voltages, but for now we don't have a reference.

                        Can you upload the manual? Does it not give any indication as to what the voltage should be?

                              I can't see where the CPU_ST_VCC comes from but it may not be too high. That rail does power IC101, a NJM2831F05 which is a 5v regulator, it would make sense to give it more than 5v.

                              However, it's a LDO with dropout of 180mV so who knows..

                              Found where CPU_ST_VCC comes from: Check Page 128 STBY ASSY board (W). Looks like unregulated supply and not much to go wrong, so that voltage is probably OK.

                                I had to do a second reset(paragraph 3.4), before the Preset arrow left+STBY.
                                If I manage to get to that screen, which is very hard by the way to get too and I start the update, it will never end. Last night, I have left it all night and in the morning it was still updating.
                                I think, I will just leave it this way, if there are no more input from you guys.

                                  How about using ponyprog to read the eeprom (and save it) then erase it and see if the firmware is capable of writing a bootable copy to it ?

                                    It would be nice, but I don't even know what is that.
                                    I'm all ears.
                                    It seems like I'm bumping more and more into EEPROM issues. I may have to buy soon a programmer and I need to learn using it.
                                    I'm working on a Vizio E371VL also, which most likely needs a new EEPROM.
                                    Kenwood nav units need a programmer, though not a basic one.
                                    MCUMALL soon is coming out with a new unit GQ-5x. I'm keeping an eye on that, Right now, it's on pre-order and it's $110 cheaper, then it will be when it will be available. There is also a TNM 2000+ and 5000+ that I may buy.

                                      Forum or phone crapped out and lost my response. Short version: locate the eeprom chip and test the caps around it with an esr meter. Flaky power is known to corrupt certain serial eeproms. Tbh though seems like a longshot with a newer device such as this.
