Sony 5disc player and disc recorder RCD-W500C

I am having an issue with the recorder/burner side of this unit

I was able to connect my phone to the unit via the analog input jacks and burn music to blank discs

Now it does not want to work
I can still play music thru the the same ports but can not record

Also the digital optical ports do not light up as well

All caps are physically ok there is no ruptures or bulging

What would be the first steps to diagnose?

I checked and found the service manual for a Sony RCD-W500C; it's about 10.1MB
The player has a test (diagnostic) mode to help troubleshoot what it's doing.
I would try that. It's kinda cool, it will tell you laser burn power, and you can connect to a PC with a special serial cable for alignment.

Generally, I find dirty lenses, bad spindle motors, and alignment/laser problems.
Sony does silly things like have IC440 run hot so it fails... and it's a TA7807
One thing to check would be the power supply voltages with the unit running.
It should have optical out working during playback, though.

thanks for the help

but the unit actually works
my dumb ass friend does not know how to use this unit
i posted this for him so i can try to fix it

i told him to bring in all the cables and phone to show me how he hooks it up and to show me the problem

well when he connected everything and pressed record it was not recording

reason being is that he never pressed the "input" button on the front of the unit

now it records with no problem

the only issue i did find with the unit is that the 5disc tray is not opening, it does not move up and down correctly, it looks kind of misaligned

and you are right the digital optical "out" does light up
