    Testing with DVOM

Is it possible to use a DVOM on caps?

If so what values are good vs's bad?

Oh.. I'm new to the board but not new to recap mobo's however i usually just replace the leaking and swelled ones and let the others go which is why i was wondering if DVOM would work...

I usually do mostly DELL and have good experiance with gx150, gx260/270 and am now getting alot of crappy sx270's &80's which are almost like a laptop.

Anyways, it is nice to have a board on the net where i can go consult others cause i thought i was the only moron doing these and my local computer shop guy said i was wast'n time by doing them and that i should just steer people into new mobo's but i found that usually they are refurbished and yet i can do the refurb and keep the middleman fee's.

Measuring the caps uF value will tell you nothing most of the time. Which is what most multimeters do.

You need to measure the ESR of the cap to assess it's condition with an ESR meter like the Bob Parker kit from Anatek.

Sometimes the caps ESR will be normal and the uF rating will drop but this is rare.

Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.
