Not sure.... but maybe you can set every individual folder or file to read only?

It depends: if your usb device is a flash drive a.k.a. pen drive without the "write protect" switch (the wide majority hasn't it), you should have the datasheet regarding the controller since most of them has a pin used for the switch.

Download this datasheet from Prolific: pin 26 is SM_WPB and pin 33 is SM_WPBIN, WP means Write protection. SM_WPB seems connected to memory chips while the latter is in the "Misc" category.
Try soldering on such a small chip is a risk: you may damage your drive, the usb port you connect it and lose all data on it. According to datashet, the controller supports the creation of "hidden" partitions with a Prolific utility (Prolific MFG kit): try looking for it. It's likely to be a Windows tools: hidden or secured partitions are unreacheable on all other operating systems.
OTOH if you don't mind risking damaging your usb drive, then backup all data and open it: I don't know how the WP pin should be connected nor I tried soldering on my drives, but if I were you I'd short SM_WMPIN to a ground pin or, even better, use a small switch to open and close the short circuit. If it does work, congratulations; if it doesn't and it smells burn ... controller gone at 99%. It's a risk.

bug of the month: write caching setting for the hard drive in device manager
            by ChaosLegionnaire
i recently bought a new wd re4 2tb with 2014 datecodes. when i got around to testing it tho in victoria hd tester, the write speed was very slow at 14 mb/s with a 256 sector transfer size. when i increased the transfer size to 1024 sectors, the write speed increased slightly to 44 mb/s. read speeds and sector verify speeds were fine and at normal speeds.

so i just ass-u-med the drive's poor performance was due to it being an advanced format drive and i was using it on winxp. when i tried cloning my system disk to this wd re4 2tb drive and writing to it in linux, the write speed...

**Need Help Unlocking BIOS and Hard Drive on Dell Precision 5820 Tower**
            by federalhouse
            Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

            **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

            **What I've Tried So Far:**

            1. I accessed

HP EliteBook Folio 1040 G2 won't detect a drive after reformat.
            by perfm2
So I've worked on dozens of HP and Dell laptops and have never encountered this before.
Steps taken in my usual process.
Reset security settings in the BIOS
Ensure existing HD comes up into the OS
Shut down the laptop and disconnected the main battery
Removed old M2 drive and replaced with a new 1tb Mushkin Temptest NVME drive. (I'm aware the bus is Sata III but the drive should still work at a slower speed right? Been my experience in other laptops)
Replace battery connector and close up the laptop
Insert my USB drive with my Windows 10 image I've...
