    Nasty interference

I never really noticed it until now but it seems that there is something seriously wrong in my A/V system.
While watching a dvd I noticed that different tones in the sound (or just plain loudness) caused the tv to display light horizontal lines and lose stability at the top and bottom of the screen. Combining loud noises (a teletype working away) with a bright picture (a sheet of paper coming out of the teletype) and the system completely loses hold on the picture.
This is where it gets interesting.
If I switch on my Sony Color video printer (tv s-video input connects through here and is bridged) while the picture is out of sync, the picture suddenly snaps and holds.

The other problem is if I turn the volume too high.
After passing 25% on volume on the stereo receiver, I get a chirp and the circuit protect activates on the amp. Even if only the amp is on. In two cases the circuit protect failed to activate and the amp restarted hard and came back with it's entire internal memory (station presets, sound preferences etc.) blank indicating it got zapped! If I very carefully turn the volume up, just before the system kicks out there is a pitched tone. A very slight change in volume makes a large difference on the squeal and it almost sounds like feedback.

The only thing I have that is not really shielded is a Rotel selector switch I modded to also have selective video. While that was done two years ago, I don't see why it is doing it now.
Anyone know what is going on?

    Re: Nasty interference

I think there may be a problem in the audio amplifier system itself. The problem you described, turning up the volume so that the circuit protector activates, sounds like there may be bad caps in the amplifier itself. If that is the case, the 'dirty' power these caps are producing could make the amplifier think the sound level has gone above a critical value, and therefore cut off. The internal memory being wiped could also have something to do with the circuit protector tripping - voltage spikes are known to be capable of wiping NVRAM chips!

Bad caps in the amplifier could even be responsible for the TV picture problems you mention. If the voltage spikes inside are too great, they could actually send extra power UP the audio line-in cables. This would interfere with the TV's internal circuitry and give the effect you mentioned, as well as providing feedback on the audio (signals would go up the cable to the TV, be bounced back and into the amp again)

I've also seen things like this when the composite or S-video chain is not correctly terminated.

I have a rather complex AV setup myself... a CRT TV, connected to a SCART switch box. That way, I can have either the output from the cable box, VCR or games console coming through to the TV. The box also allows me to record one source while watching another (watching the games console while recording TV, for example).
The sound is taken out of that box through two phono leads and goes into the line-in of a stereo amplifier. To my knowledge, nothing like your problem has ever occurred, but I have seen drops in the composite signal level before - if, for example, I'm trying to view the cable TV picture AND send the same signal through to the VCR.

You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...

I'm still having problems. I need a better way to ceck besides pulling the amp out. That's a half hour job to label wires and disconnect the unit.

          BINGO!
I was listening to a cd last night when I wanted to switch over to my vcr for a second. I switched from CD to VIDEO and the cd could still be heard!
Probably there is a bad gate somewhere in the system that needs to be fixed.

T-con suspect issue. Both ribbon cables no picture. One ribbon cable ok. (58pus8545)
            by Tr0ll
Hi guys! I realized you have a lot of knowledge here so i am hoping you could point me in right direction with my odd issue.

The Tv is a Philips 58PUS8545/12, it had no picture but working backlights.

            Original T-con:
Opened the Tv and tested to unplug one ribbon cable at a time. With this test i could see that i got fine picture on both halves as long as there was only one ribbon cable connected, with two connected picture were gone.

            First replacement T-con:

I thought it might be t-con and ordered new t-con from china(supposedly tested)...

SAMSUNG UN55KS9000F picture fades then distorts into vertical lines after 20 seconds
            by JJAAMM
This was my main TV for the last 6 years. I'm not inclined to throw out a $2600 TV so quickly so I'm trying to investigate the issue.

            Problem
TV was disconnected from power for 6 months during construction. When I plugged it yesterday picture was fine, after 30 seconds it dimmed then started developing horizontal lines, picture then starts to ghost vertically until it degrades into vertical streaks. TV always displays a perfect picture when cold. I can unplug TV for 5 minutes and plug it back in and picture is restored for 20 seconds. I can also keep it in standby mode...

Vizio D65x-G4 Volume changes on its own
            by karthur
On this Vizio D65x, the volume will change on its own. I don't mean like during commercials where the volume will increase. I mean its like the (+) volume button on the remote is pressed and the actual volume dialog is displayed on the screen going up. It will do this, then the volume may start going down. It might go all the way to "0"or it might stop at a different number, then start going back up. The whole time its doing this, the volume dialog is shown on the screen.

It wont do it until it has been "ON" for 20 or 30 minutes, so it does seem to be heat related....

Samsung TV model UE50TU: rebooting, backlight, sound, but no picture
            by TR103
            Hi, I have a Samsung UE50TU with:
            - sound and backlight, but no picture
            - when it arrived, it had a picture for a few seconds
            - it keeps rebooting
            - without ribbon cable between the two panel boards, it does not reboot but I have no picture
            - without cable between mainboard and lcd panel, it does not reboot (but obviously i have no picture)
            - when i try a tape fix, its keeps rebooting, unless I tape off pin 1 (the innermost pin). In that case it does not reboot but I have no picture.

            - without cable between mainboard and lcd panel and with a jumpered...

Samsung UN60EH6000F Black Screen, Backlight and Sound Good. Power Cycle Returns Picture
            by Mgiffune
I have a 60 inch Samsung UN60EH6000F flatscreen TV. The screen went black a few months ago Sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. I replaced the TCon board with a used board purchased from Ebay. It worked fine for a 3-4 months, then the screen started β€˜fading' back. Once again, sound is good, backlight is good, no menu. However, this time the picture looks fine for about 10-15 minutes, then fades back. If I power cycle the TV, the display reappears, for another 10-15 minutes, then fades black again. Repeatable ever time.

I ordered a supposedly β€˜new' Tcon board this time, and
