    Questions on drift and tolerance

    Hi guys,

    I've been parts shopping for a little project that I'm looking to build, and I got stumped by this. The build requires a very exact matched pair of capacitors giving as close a total capacitance as possible to 1020pf (within 0.5% tolerance).

    I noticed that RS has some silver micas that are rated to 1% tolerance for 1000pf which I can then combine it with another small silver mica rated to 0.5% tolerance, and get my 1020pf.

    Alternatively, I can grab a LC meter and head down to the nearby electronics shop and cherry pick out some silver micas that are rated at 5% tolerance from their shelf. The store silver micas are much much cheaper.

    My big question stems from the concept of tolerance and drift. Is tolerance only relevant for the actual measurement of a component with respect to it's rated value? Or will a component that was originally built to tighter tolerance be less susceptible to drifting as well?

    I guess my queries can be summed up as, "Will I score a better deal (and not compromise anything) if I cherry pick out some nice 1000pf caps from the store, as opposed to getting the more pricey ones from RS?"

    The tolerance, as I understand it, is the initial tolerance at a given temperature (e.g. 25C). Things like temperature coefficient, voltage coefficient and aging are not included in the tolerance. Consequently, a 1uF, 50V, Z5U or Y5V ceramic capacitor at 70C and 40VDC applied could be as low as .2 or .3uF (working from memory). I think mica or COG ceramic could be good choices; how they age I'm not sure. I believe mica is used in military equipment (where stability and long life are critical); COG ceramic may be also.

      I think this has been answered but I couldn't find the thread.

      Someone asked me if it would harm a capacitor (10F [not a typo], 24v) if it was operated on nothing more than 12v.

      So, I ask... Does it change any of the capacitor's characteristics/parameters/? in any way if it is never operated near rated voltage?

      If operated for years at 1/2 rated voltage, does it accept full rated voltage like it would if it had always been operated at the higher voltage?

      Or would it require reforming?

      Hi,

      I’ve been dealing with some stick drift issues on PS5 DualSense controllers. I’ve replaced the analogs on 4 different controllers using parts from 3 different suppliers (Mobile Sentrix and some from eBay), but I’m still getting slight drift, around 0.01 to 0.05 — only noticeable when zoomed in on the DualSense test GUI.

      Anyone else had this happen even after replacing the sticks? Not sure if it’s the parts, or fault with the controller, or just how sensitive these are. Would really appreciate any tips or suggestions!...

      Just a quick question - is it ok to use ‘audio' rated caps on a non audio device.
      Is there any reasons why they shouldn't be used?
      I'm just trying to find some good quality caps on ebay for a small repair and I've noticed there are alot of audo rated caps in the size i need but not so many non audio rated.
      If I can't find any Panasonic what would be any other good makes to consider?

      i am not sure if this question belongs to this forum section exactly, but since there already are some queries here about power transformer, let's give it a try.

      So, I have this old but very well preserved Casio SA-20 ToneBank keyboard. It is powered either by five 1.5V AA bateries, or via a power adapter, so its operating voltage is 7.5V. The power adapter input jack also states 7.5V DC In. Now, since this keyboard was never supplied with a PT, but actually came with test bateries included, I decided to try to buy an adapter for it.       Hello,

      I have an ASUS P5KPL-AM board with swollen and leaky capacitors. Amazingly, it still works, but I'm guessing it won't be long before it doesn't so I'm looking to replace the capacitors. All that electrolyte is probably not good for the traces too.

      Anyway. Every cap on that board that is 820uf 6.3v is swollen, so that issue is isolated to those specific caps. They're TK AWTY caps. Never heard of them but I suppose they're bad quality.

      To replace them, I bought Rubycon ZLH capacitors with the exact same 820uf 6.3v spec. But when I went to test...
