Can a capacitor have low ESR and still be bad?

Can a capacitor have low ESR and still be bad?

I'm wondering, because I just swapped out a bunch of high ESR caps from a power supply, and the unit went from faulty to dead...

I checked the ESR on all the parts I put in (didn't have enough new parts around, so I took some from a project I've given up on)

Could it be that some of the replacement capacitors have other problems that doesn't affect their ESR readings?

If a cap is shorted it will read low ESR.
    -
The way to tell is to also check DC resistance with a DMM.
If it reads low on both it's a shorted cap.
    -
Most caps won't have to be pulled to check resistance.
Only need to pull the ones that read low to make sure it's not a parallel resistance issue.
If they read high in circuit they will still read high out of circuit.

Also check that you didn't make a solder bridge or a cold joint somewhere.

The capacitance could also be too low.

        What was the original fault?

Do you know what ESR value the old capacitors _should_ have been? If your new ones had ESR much lower compared to what the originals had when they were brand new that can also cause issues.

(Though I believe that the PSU will still work in such a case, but you will get worse ripple than there should be)

How do you define "faulty" as it was previously? Were the caps visibly vented? I am wondering if you simply caught a PSU fault in its early stages and the existing damage got worse. Electronics like to do that the *next* time they're cold powered on.

GTX 1080 TI Gigabyte Aorus low resistance on vmem
            by cind12
Hi guys, i was wondering, i've got 9Ohms on Vmem, one of the mosfet was shortet to ground, so i've desoldered hi and low mosfets nad still low res, then i removed all of the memory chips, and the resistance is still low, so did you had maybe a card with that low res on memories, and the card was working fine ?
Removed the U1866Q and still without result, i dont have thermal cam so can't see where is hot spot when incjeting voltage.
The resistance on core is ok 0.1Ohm ((Power 0.8V when on)
Resistance on 12V 4K ohms (Power present when on)

Extreme High Current & Low Voltage Short Killer ??
            by DynaxSC
            Hi Folks

I'm looking for a extreme high current short killer solution for a reasonable cost.

I have an LGA1700 motherboard (ASUS PRIME Z790-P WiFi) where I exchanged the LGA socket already 3 times, and every time after the socket exchange I get a short of power supply lines VCORE (V variable) and VCCIN_AUX (1.8V).
After taking off the socket, the shorts dissappear again.
The soldermask on the socket is already partially demaged from the heat, so I have reconstructed the soldermask by manually painting the missing soldermask parts with a very small top of a...

            Cyberpower 1500AVR UPS repair
            by quickname
I'd like to start out by thanking this forum for providing the info to be able to repair my 15 year old CP1500AVRLCD UPS. Here is all the info I gathered during my trouble-shooting and re-capping.

Like clockwork, I've had to replace the SLA batteries every 4 years. It was about that time and the UPS was acting like it needed new batteries... randomly shutting off with AC present, not being able to charge fully, and poor runtime when AC was removed. So, I replaced the batteries but noticed that it was not charging properly.

I decided to verify that the batteries were...

            RTX 3080 FE Identifying capacitor
            by Prolog
Hi people, I hope this is the correct spot to post this, I'm new to the forum.

I have an RTX 3080 Founders Edition which has a burnt up capacitor (it was in parallel with another capacitor which appears damaged too), so I am hoping to be able to identify the capacitor values and order replacements.

I hope these photos make it clear which component I am referring to:
(yes, the soldering is a bit botched from removing the blown one, I know)

I have found the board schematic (attached), but there does not seem to be a boardview available. I have never...
