hi all can someone tell me how long it would take a samxon 150uf 450v capacitor to discharge by itself

my dad once discharged an a huge oil capicator on his desk when he was in high school. blew a hole in the desks metalCap Datasheet Depot: http://www.paullinebarger.net/DS/

Re: discharge
Its normally good practice to have discharge resistor across the terminals of a capacitor that has a high voltage across it ,this dumps the voltage after the power is switched off.
Usually the resistors are 47K ohms.

Re: discharge
A microwave magnetron or A/C compressor start capacitor? Those are the only places I can think of oil filled caps in consumer products. The microwave cap should be charged in the kilovolt range and would provide a bigger bang.Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.Comment

by shovenoseI am attempted to replace this capacitor to repair a power supply. I put in a random used NCC KXG 450v/100uF and it worked but it's too tall and skinny to reinstall the heatsink and even if I drill a big hole in the heatsink for the cap it would still be too tall and the power supply will no longer fit in the network switch.
The original cap seems to be 35mm in diameter and maybe 25mm in height. I could probably go up to 30mm in height and be OK.
Thanks for any help with a source for these, I only need one or two, and the cheaper the better. I found some on eBay that... -
by redwireI'm making a new capacitor discharge tool. Asking for suggestions for sizing the discharge resistor.
Mr. Carlson's Lab High Voltage Capacitor Discharge Tool 1 is using 4 of 1kΩ 50W aluminum (mount to heatsink) resistors in series for 4kΩ 200W, so it's big, which is fine.
His Patreon but I don't have a paid subscription for the project details but it looks straightforward. The plastic box with aluminum plate can't get rid of any amount of that heat though.
Wirewound resistors can be overloaded by a factor of 5 for 5sec. and a factor of 10 for brief times. I've never tried say... -
by chth96Hello.
I have 29inch LG CRT TV,And Yesterday,Whenever I connect AC power cord to power outlet without switch on, I heard a sound like white noise, And When I switched on this CRT TV, It sometime displayed correctly But usually It won't last more than 20 minute and The screen begin to dark and It finally did not display at all for hours..
Today,I dismantled its plastic case and discharged the biggest capacitor(400wv 470uf) which still holds 250 voltage, and I finally detached PCB from cathode-ray tube.
I measured ESR value of most of caps in PCB with MESR-100 and I found that KME(25v...-

by slybundaanyone heard of these caps before? at first glance i mistook them to be Elna caps but closer look and it was elite. not sure if they are known failure prone brand.
also they are 47uf and 450v. why are they so large in height? i can get replacement 450v 47uf caps that are a quarter the height. what am i missing here?
if i were to replace them what should i be looking for?
they are on the power board of a toshiba (vestel) tv power board.
pic attached...-

by shagsterHi, I have 2 identical capacitors from an old scope I'm trying to get running.
Both caps measure ok in ESR and Capacitance values imo.
Data sheet says tolerance spec is -10 +50%. And these are way under that.
Both of there original values are marked as (430uf 200vdc).
After ~40 years, they now measure 485uf and 465uf. Well under the +50% tol.
Anyway I charged them up to 24 volts dc and discharged them slowly down to 10 volts using a Digital Multi Meter. Funny thing was one of them just took over 4 minutes to discharge down to 10 volts. And the...-
