    Build surge protector/supressor

i want to build a surge protector one with about 500 joules of protection but i have never build anything as far as electronics. i have repair several monitors and a couple motherboards i looked online and didnt see anything that i could use to teach me how to build the inside i saw a few webpages on how to make the boxes and such but nothing on the board and internal parts. also there is no kit you can buy to build

reasons i want to build one

    to learn
    i need one
i think it would be fun
    repairable by me
    easily dissembled when failure

The simplest surge protector I've stumbled across was 3 naked copper wires (solid core), separated in air by the thickness of a paper

    Also protected by a fuse.

When lightning strikes, the air conducts and often melts those wires together (also blows the automatic fuses)
1mm of air is good for about 300V

You should be able to make a surge protector without a circuit board, by attaching MOVs between hot & ground, neutral & ground, and hot & neutral, after a fuse, of course (in case a MOV or other crowbar shorts), and then wire that to a line filter. Or you could take a power strip that includes a circuit breaker and attach MOVs similarly, but there probably won't be any room for a line filter.
