How does LCR meter measure capacitance?

    Hi guys,

I am using an LCR meter with a test voltage of 0.3Vrms. Available test frequency is only 100Hz. But the capacitor that I want to test is specified at 120Hz.

Although this seems to be pretty close, I just want to know how much would be the difference if the LCR meter could read it at 120Hz.

Do you guys know any formula or correction factor that I can use to compute the capacitance at 120Hz with the values I am getting at 100Hz?

Also if you could share how does the LCR meter measure capacitance and dissipation factor (I mean does it measure impedance, current , time constant then convert to capacitance), that would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Re: How does LCR meter measure capacitance?

Hi, the capacitance of a capacitor is not going to change in any important way if the test frequency is changed, especially if it's only between 100Hz and 120Hz.

120Hz seems to often appear in capacitor specs because it's the ripple frequency of full wave rectified 60Hz US mains power. The designers of the meter would have chosen 100Hz because it's best suited to their measurement technique.

Only the manufacturer of your meter would know exactly how it works, and they are probably not all the same. With most of these kind of things, all that's important is that the instrument is reasonably accurate. Like a cell phone, you don't need to know exactly what's in it, to use it.

      Cyberpower 1500AVR UPS repair
      by quickname
I'd like to start out by thanking this forum for providing the info to be able to repair my 15 year old CP1500AVRLCD UPS. Here is all the info I gathered during my trouble-shooting and re-capping.

Like clockwork, I've had to replace the SLA batteries every 4 years. It was about that time and the UPS was acting like it needed new batteries... randomly shutting off with AC present, not being able to charge fully, and poor runtime when AC was removed. So, I replaced the batteries but noticed that it was not charging properly.

I decided to verify that the batteries were...

Modification of a Fluke multi meter that uses three AA batteries to use a 14500 lithium ion battery
      by sam_sam_sam
I have had with regular AA batteries that leak this meter is expensive new I already replaced the battery battery clips once and the same thing happened again and I am tried of so it is getting modified to accommodate lithium ion batteries that are the same size excluding the positive terminal and removing the battery clips I will have enough room for the BMS protection board

I going to put 3 lithium ion battery in parallel with the BMS protection board and a way to charge the battery externally and heat shrink the battery pack and use a JST connector so I easily remove the battery...

Changing the scale of an analog meter
      by jorpec
      Hi

I want to change the scale of an analog meter, to monitor the charge of an li-ion single cell, so the needle at the end would point 4.2 volts and the 0 on the meter would point 2.5 volts or so, i tried to add diodes or a zener in series with the meter but the changes of the ambient temperature also changes the voltage value on the meter
I wonder how i can accomplish this so the meter would be precise at any temperature ?

How an incandescent light and a ESR meter ** friend**have a machine blowing fuses
      by sam_sam_sam
About a month ago we had a transformer jumper wire that burned in two different places between two transformers caused over $200 thousand dollars worth of damage to VFD drives at least 10 of them and a memory card and quite a few power supply as well

Now we have most of the equipment that got damaged back up and running except a feeder that has issues and we are waiting for some parts for

Now we also have another piece of equipment that was blowing fuses on the 110 volt controller switch circuit with the ā€œEā€ stops and one switching power (24 volt) supply and a transformer...

      Yamaha PASC5 X0S-00 E-bike charger 42V only providing 12 V
      by MrBojangles
      Hey Guys!

Hoping I can get some help here. I have a e-bike charger with 4 pins on the output. It has a light but the light does not turn on.

When I check the voltage on the 4 pins on one of the pairs I get 12 V. On the other pairs the voltage keeps changing.

Nothing looks damaged and there are no shorts on any of the capacitors. I've ordered a ESR meter to measure the capacitance of the capacitors but it will take a while for the package to arrive.

      Any tips?

      Thanks
