Hakko 936 soldering iron - tips don't fit

    I took apart a Hakko 907 wand on a 936 soldering station.
Tip 900M-T-1 (on the left) is too small to fit on the heating element.
Tip HAKKO-B (on the right) is too big and loose to fit over the heating element.

I dunno what is messed up

It looks like that the sleeve has slid out of the tip and has stayed on the heater.

      probably.
the heater should be white ceramic, not metal-looking.

Sorry the ceramic was white one day, but I think the above comments are exactly correct. If you look into the opening of a tip, you can see the inner sleeve or the lack of.

I looked harder and it's an insert pipe stuck to the heating element. Gentle tug and it's off. The heater now fits into a normal 900M tip (4mm ID). Insert was 4.3mm OD.
I don't know what Hakko tip has inserts, must be pretty old. I took the iron out of the garbage from Manufacturing dept.

I could buy a new 907 wand (chinese) clone for $8 on eBay, but they are a lot of hassle. The heating elements are the wrong resistance, temp sensor different and can wreck your 936 station.

if you need a new iron, either get a chinese hakko T12/T15 clone, or a real JBC.
