    Advice on choosing a multimeter

I'm looking for a new multimeter that will last me a few years and was after some advice. I like Fluke's range and have this one in mind:

    http://www.newark.com/fluke/fluke-11...eld/dp/83K1721

I think it does everything I need, but just wanted to check there's no point looking further up the range? I'm primarily going to be using it for tinkering with Arduino kits, audio amps etc.

I was originally trying to stick to a $200 budget… Is there any point shelling out more for a high precision device just in case I need one down line?

    Fancier alternatives include:

    Fluke 177
    Fluke 87-5

Also which would be best for reading capacitors?

    Thanks
    John

I see you asked this question over at eevblog as well so you should get some opinions there.

Let me answer the capacitor question first. If you are troubleshooting, you will most likley need an ESR meter to get any valuable readings from a capacitor.

While some Flukes can measure capacitance no multimeter can measure ESR.

For the $200 budget, see my previous post with respect to the $100 category especially since you are in the USA.

I think you can easily get some sort of used Fluke 87 (either original, III or V) for easily under $200.

Maybe get an original used Fluke 87 and an used Fluke 117. You might need both if you have to measure voltage and current at the same time. Both should be obtainable for under $200 with some patient bidding.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Re: Advice on choosing a multimeter

You don't buy a multimeter to measure capacitors. They only measure capacitance, which is pointless and doesn't help you determine if a capacitor is good or bad.

You'd need a LCR meter to measure leakage, esr etc.. but on a budget you can get a simple esr meter like Blue ESR, Esr Micro and so on. I have esr micro and it does the job just fine.

And since you also posted on eevblog I think it's pointless to repeat what those guys said about 117 from Fluke.

Check out Martin's youtube channel for some multimeter reviews :

Have a look at Agilent's offerings and the Agilent meters Martin reviewed, they have quite a few good models that give more features for the money.

I was looking at the Fluke 115/117 today on the Sears outlet page. Not that I need a fluke but the prices were not bad.

          Fluke 289 multimeter not working
          by Pauldg1
I have a Fluke 289 multimeter which does not work.
Have anyone an idea what could be the cause?
When I turn on the device only the green led is continuously on, and strange stripes are present in lcd screen. I can only turn off the device by removing the batteries.

          Any suggestions will be appreciated...

How To Test a P-channel Trench Mosfet Using A Multimeter In Diode Mode
          by dj8452000
I am new to electronics and I'm understanding most of what I'm reading but I have a mosfet on my board that I've identified as a P-channel Trench Mosfet. I haven't a clue how to test this and what I should expect to see with the multimeter probes. I am hoping someone with years more experience than myself can help me understand how to use a multimeter to read this. Please look at the drawing I have attached to this and can you try to explain to me what I should be doing with my multimeter in diode mode and what results I should expect from a good mosfet?...

Fluke 123 no image on the screen
          by Khoja
          Hello experts,

I recently purchased a used Fluke 123 Industrial Scopemeter from an online Japanese auction site (jauce.com). It has now been delivered. Unfortunately, I overlooked the fact that the seller neither guarantees its working condition nor accepts returns.

When I power it on, the backlight comes on, but there is no image on the screen. After opening the device, I noticed clear signs of previous soldering in several areas (photos attached). It seems someone attempted repairs before.

At this point, I'll have to try and fix it myself. Has anyone here...

          Craftsman 82345 Multimeter broke!
          by trex66
My daily carry just stopped working only me. Started last week with the voltage flickering. Found one lead was broken and I ordered new ones. New leads didn't change anything, it displays “-1” on all settings but on continuity will give the tone when touching. Checked battery and found the fuse blown. Replaced fuse but same results. Cleaned the dial and led display and its parts. Board looks nice and clean no burned or broken components. Nothing traumatic happened to this multimeter I put it aside when I found the lead broken and didn't touch it until I got the neAnyone have any ideas what's...
