DMM and rework station help

Been looking around for a good DMM....
could people post which one they use? there is alot of crap floating around the net (ebay is no exception)
my brother has a:
brymen.. (somthing)-02, but he said the (something)-03 would suite me better...
???

and posibly a reworking station....

A lot depends on your budget and location. I love Fluke models 87 or 187 (DMM), but at nearly $400USD, many folks here would probably use their money differently. Weller and Hakko have good GP solder stations - EC-1001 or 936 respective, IIRC. But those can be pricey as well. Metcal is really nice ... and pricey. No experience with special SMT rework stations

Fluke make$ the be$t DMMs. I bought a Velleman DVM890C from http://www.bgmicro.com/ >meters, for $44.50. It will measure just about anything but ESR It comes with a temp probe. I got the unit that measuires in C but F is avalible if you wish. They have a voltage auto ranging unit for $48 w/o temp probe.

For the limited PCB soldering I've done, solder wicking and stainless steel dental picks seem to work well. I found and bought picks at an automotive swap-meet for $2 each. I bought 5.

voltage auto-ranging is helpfull in what sircumstances?

If your not sure of the voltage you'll be finding, I think auto ranging would be a plus.

Check out the meter for $44.50 or the lesser units. The $44.50 job comes with a yellow ruberized holster. Seem like decent kit for home use. I have a couple of $10 DMMs that have refused to die, dispite being dropped and rattled around in tool boxes (diesel mechanic)

would i use such a thing(based on what i said i'd be using it for?) please excuse my newbieosity :P

For best meter use Fluke, analog meter use Simpson or Iskra

For best soldering stations use JBC, average ones Weller, Pace or hakko.

For best capacitor tester use Sencore LC103

brymen don't seem bad from what I have used...fluke well nuff said
Guess it depents on
1 how much you want to spent,
2 how often and what purpose are you looking to use them for
EG as a bizz or just hobby type use.

I use about 4 different meters 2 cheapies and 2 not so cheap Uptek and LT
would love a Fluke but $$$$ (I have used them and like them)
Nearly bought A brymen but missed the sale at a company in perth
(people from OZ will know which mob I am talking about)

As to Hakko, I think you may be ref to the 701 model.
(think that the model number they use)

That model in Oz from what I found was about $1,300 at one place I looked at and about $1000 plus GST I think at another NOT Cheap!

Hate to think what the Best the would cost here $?$?$

(our dollar isn't that bad against the US, but it always seems much more here when you look at USA prices and do a conversion...WHY I don't know)

So I got me a china knock off Aoyue 701...it works but I am not expecting to get a long life out of it without problems, heard the pots are or go dicky too....
its Iron in comparision to my weller...really just not the same...takes longer to recover then the weller.

bottom line you get what you pay for I guess....pay peanuts get monkeys
althought some of the cheaper stuff isn't too bad these days.

As to skills...yep there are a few links that can provide some very helpful hints on how best to do things
but the bottom line is you and practising on stuffed boards to improve and hone your skills


Now if these 2 links are in US dollars I shudder to think what a supplier here would ask
