What type of solder do I need to buy?

    Replacing caps in monitor...any recommendations?

    Thanks!

Re: What type of solder do I need to buy?

    Small diameter, anything with lead.

The solder used in most devices has no lead, but that means it requires a high temperature to turn liquid, 235c and up.
Solder with lead turns liquid at lower temperatures, of about 180-185c, so you can solder stuff easier with cheaper soldering tools (low wattage). Also, when adding solder with lead to solder without lead, you lower that solder's temperature so it's easier to fix stuff this way.

    So get solder with lead.
You have 60/40 versions that turn liquid around 180c and then turn solid within a range of lower temperatures, and there's the 63/37 version that turns liquid at exactly 183c and turns solid almost the moment the temperature goes below.

I prefer the 63/37 version as once you have solder on something and remove the warm tip, the solder solidifies faster.

There are also other versions which include 1% or around that value of Copper or Silver - no point paying extra for those, as they're beneficial only for soldering surface mounted components.

Oh... one more thing.. the solder wire should have FLUX inside it, to make it easier for you it should have at least 2% flux. Try getting versions that have mildly active flux or no-clean flux - this way you don't have to worry a lot about cleaning the board after (flux is a "low power" acid, the fluxes that aren't no-clean or mild will continue to eat into the surface in time)

good brands.. kester solder, multicore .... if you're in US there are a lot of options on Digikey

    - ignore the warnings about the lead, you won't get poisoned unless you eat it or rub it in your hands for weeks/months, just washing your hands after use is enough. The flux inside the solder wire is more harmful to you when it burns as solder becomes liquid, so you should have a small fan near you work area, to move that smoke away.

thank you so much! do you think I would be able to find it at a hardware store like Lowe's?

That kind of store probably only holds the type of solder that's used for pipes by plumbers - that one has different composition.

        Order online from

        digikey.com : http://search.digikey.com/us/en/cat/...solder/1310838

        amazon.com : http://www.amazon.com/mn/search/?_en...o clean solder

Kester Solder, Multicore, MG Chemicals are ok.
        no-clean flux , mild , 2-3.3% , small diameter (for example 0.02"-0.04")

Lowes might have something but I wouldn't count on it.
If nothing else radio shack will but sometimes they don't keep the small diameters in stock like they should.
Ace Hardware might be a good place to check.
I got a fresh pound roll of Kester 44 on ebay for about 1/2 price a couple months ago.
          - Good solder ain't cheap!

Like he said 60/40 or 63/37
Rosin Core [name of the correct Flux]
Between .020" and .030" diameter. [0.025"-ish is the perfect size.]

No, they have a full electrical section and they do have electrical solder but that isn't someplace I'd buy solder for electronics so I've never looked if they have the small diameters.

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
              by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

              Liquid flux in kitchen owen
              by Kemer
I will heat a graphics card in kitchen owen and will use a little liquid flux on it. I probably won't use that small owen for cooking pupose but want to ask if someone tried the same thing. Thank you.

Is it good to use chemistronic flux off es835b for flux remover?
              by chth96
I want to purchase any good flux remover But "chemistronic flux off es835b" is the most common flux remover in my nation..
Is it good to use chemistronic flux off es835b for flux remover?
Or I have to purchase "3m novec flux remover" which is quite expensive in my nation?

              solder don't stick, new tip.
              by datboi
solder isn't sticking at all to my iron.

i always tin it when turning it off, not sure maybe i didn't do it properly one time and it oxidized.

i tried dipping it in rosin and applying tin to try to re-tin in like in some youtube videos, but it don't work

i also tried very lightly brushing it with a brass sponge to remove the oxidation layer but nothing seems to help.

why am i having so many issues with this? how do i remove the oxide layer and re-tin it?

              (i...
