    Recommend a USB DAQ?

Every once in a blue moon I need something resembling an oscilloscope, but usually with 5 or 6 channels, portable, and with pretty minimal resolution and bandwidth requirements. A USB DAQ looks like it would fill the bill. It would plug into an old laptop (for now), so it has to work with USB 1.1. Also, ideally, it would have an open interface, so if need be I could program it.

In other words, something like this:

    http://labjack.com/u3/specs

but with a wider voltage input range. The latest problem is diagnosing an automatic transmission issue, where I need to simultaneously measure the PWM going to a couple of solenoids, and the DC signals coming back from 4 sensors. So it must measure up to at least 20V and also accept voltages well beyond that without blowing up the inputs. 10 bit resolution would probably be enough, but 12 would be better. A sample rate of 40 kHz should do. (I think. Anybody know what the base frequency is for the PWM waves fed to AT solenoids?) I don't expect to be able to use this for diagnosing motherboard waveforms, or anything else fast, just audio frequencies and down.

It should also be cheap - this is for hobby use, so I can't justify a lot of $$$.

    Suggestions?

In a couple of previous cases I was able to get by with making "recordings" using audacity from the audio input through a diode clamped adapter. That works OK for AC, but not at all for DC, and of course it was limited to two inputs.

I did look through the oscilloscope thread here: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=6062
but most (all?) of those needed to be plugged into 120/240 VAC.

    Re: Recommend a USB DAQ?

    I ordered one of these:

    http://www.dataq.com/products/startkit/di149.htm

Will report back on how well it works once it has arrived and I have had a chance to try it out some. This one was both inexpensive and it claims to be well protected from high input voltages, so hopefully I won't blow it up short of doing something really stupid.

Try USB data acquisition system from Futek Instruments. Just browse through their products at www.futekinst.com. Affordable and very easy to use. I've using their products for both laboratory use and as a hobby.

I also used ADVANTECH USB. It has lots of different module, you can see which one suits you well! Though i think it's old software may have some bugsˊˋ...... but it's hardware is quit well. and i heard they are going to release a new version for bundle DAQ software. Hmmm... i think it will be better than the old one.

You can see it's site to see what you need!

How not to Damage an Oscilloscope
          by Tarot Superstars
          Hello.
I have jut got my first analogue oscilloscope. An Isotech 620 20MHz.

I want to learn how not to damage it, and I found instructions on the internet obscure.
They talk about ground, earth, floating ground, this, that....
But they don't actually say anything anything useful so far.

          I want to know:
Don't connect exactly this to exactly there or it blows up.

For example, I am tracing a signal from a function generator in an audio amp, or testing for voltages in different parts of a circuit.
I want to know what not to connect...

Looking for help diagnosing a 65" Panasonic Viera TV - TH-65DX700Z (Turns on - Clicks - Turns off)
          by mostachio
          Hi Badcaps,

I've had a friend discard a TH-65DX700Z Pansonic Viera Television and I've decided to have a go at repairing it. If possible could I please get some advice in terms of diagnosing the problem so I can purchase the appropriate parts for repair whether it be components, a repair kit or a replacement board. I am happy to post pictures if required.

          TV Details:

          Model # - TH-65DX700Z

          Symptoms:

The television turns on and displays a picture then makes a clicking sound and turns off.

I haven't opened it up yet but...

          Dynamco analogue oscilloscope
          by Evets
I have recently acquired a Dynamco D7100 analogue oscilloscope without a user manual. As this is the first time I have owned or used an oscilloscope I would like to try and find an instruction book. The manufacturers no longer hold any information and a Google search only found one site but when I downloaded a 'service manual' all I got was gobbledegook. Any help would be gratefully appreciated or even pointers to a generic manual where I could learn more.

Need help diagnosing the NM-D471 REV 2.0 motherboard for a LENOVO laptop.
          by JJ8409
          Hello,
I need your help with an issue I'm encountering while diagnosing a NM-D471 REV 2.0 motherboard from a Lenovo laptop. The laptop won’t power on. I started by checking the power rails, including the main power line and the 3.3V and 5V rails.

I do have a proper 3.3V across the line, including at the chip responsible for managing 3.3V/5V—same goes for the 5V rail. I haven’t tried to simulate a power-on yet, since the main issue still needs to be resolved.

I have full access to the boardview, but I’m not sure what to check next to isolate the problem.
