Gutless, not bloated, killer, and should be hall of shame POS

Introducing... the POS-124Z which really is a POS:

    Yep it's a POS allright.

I tried powering it up. It's a KILLER - not fried, but sure will fry things! I got 21V out of it unloaded according to my DMM!

I tried 21W load (car lamp) - got 16V, which is really pushing that lamp.

Then I tried a 50W load (car headlight) - got 13.2V. Not too bad but this is with the heavy load...except the circuit breaker kept tripping.

So I had to take a peek:

EIEW. Looks like a Darlington emitter follower + Zener device. Heatsinking? What heatsinking? Oh that little heatsinking...

I suspect this is a 16VAC RMS transformer though I didn't check. So peak voltage is like 22.6V though should get 16VDC continuous. At the full 4A and 13.2V output it's dissipating more than 10W and I would expect some finned radiator here.

hmm... what to do with this...makeover with some other regulation circuitry?

BTW, schematic: nothing much to it. Just two NPN transistors (TO-3 outside, and a TO-220 attached funny on the inside) wired Darlington. A 12V (assumed) zener with a 1K dropper resistor, and a 200uF filter across the zener. LED has a 1KΩ dropper resistor too. Main filter cap is 4.7mF. Not much else is in this PSU...

Would be ideal for a vintage model train layout (Athearn blue box etc.) if it had DC output, a variable resistor and a way to switch polarity. Wouldn't put it anywhere near a modern DCC layout though.

hmm...wonder if I changed the topology a bit, it would make it a bit better regulated...

Never did I ever assume this PSU was broken. While changing topologies I realized the series pass transistor was bad. It had no markings on it, but of course it's NPN so I swapped it with a junk 2N3771 and reverted to the original layout. It works much better now, though 14.8V OCV, it does get down to 13.8V fairly quickly when loaded.

KDM 480W PSU upgrade succes! (opinions?)
          by bauto601
Back in 2020 i bought a (2nd hand) compact ATX psu to replace my current one. My PC case only fits very short ATX power supplies so i didn't really have the choice of buying a decent 80Plus unit. The current unit is a modded YoungYear unit that i made a thread about a while ago:
A "nice" YoungYear unit? - Badcaps

The "new" unit is a KDM-M6480 480W psu, the 480W number is a typical KDM bullshit claim of course, but the 24A rating on the 12V rail seemed reasonable and the "Active PFC" claim gave me a bit of hope that this was going to be decent-ish....

Extreme High Current & Low Voltage Short Killer ??
          by DynaxSC
          Hi Folks

I'm looking for a extreme high current short killer solution for a reasonable cost.

I have an LGA1700 motherboard (ASUS PRIME Z790-P WiFi) where I exchanged the LGA socket already 3 times, and every time after the socket exchange I get a short of power supply lines VCORE (V variable) and VCCIN_AUX (1.8V).
After taking off the socket, the shorts dissappear again.
The soldermask on the socket is already partially demaged from the heat, so I have reconstructed the soldermask by manually painting the missing soldermask parts with a very small top of a...

          Asrock Fatality Killer Z97x boardview
          by chaos-theory
I need the boardview for the Asrock fatality killer z97x
It's my own motherboard and I really need to fix it, I need it for work, both my motherboards broke at almost the same time, and I don't have any backup to continue my work, if anyone can share the boadview, I will immensely be grateful!...

Board view for ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac
          by Nivla liu
Looking for the board view or schematic for the ASRock x370 Killer SLI/ac, Board died, and I want to see if I can spot the fault and see if it could be repaired,

Thanks for looking, and if you have the file a big thanks.

          CKV Short Killer
          by kevin_allein
Hi, recently I found a lot of videos on YouTube regarding CKV Short Killer. All of those Videos seem to be from Asia (e.g. in Hindi). I could not find a single English Video. Translation on YouTube on those videos does not work well, so it is hard to understand details.
Basically it seems to address the frequent problems of LCD panels, when CKV and CKVB lines have some short and the only fix is to cut those lines or use tape on the ribbon cable to the secondary scalar board of the panel.
Does anyone have any experience with that ?
