Sony KDL-S40A12 Turns on then off again.

Dont have the tv just yet but collecting it tomorrow.

Has anyone had any experience with the above tv, i am told by the ebayer that it switches on, you see the channel number then it switches off with a flashing standby light.

Also, i am paying £39 for it. Is that a good price.

It also comes with a sky hd box too, so could recoup some cash back off that.

I don't have experience with that TV, but the flashing standy light shows a code. Count how many times flashes and that is a code, which means something.
Try finding the service manual at elektrotanya.hu and usually they mention there those codes what thay mean.

£39 ain't bad for a Sony... I've struggled to get one for a decent price. I would generally pay around £40 to £50 for a 40"...

So it cant be bad with a free sky hd box then.

I am picking the tv up today at around 3pm uk time so will let you know.

Its a few years old and only has 1 hdmi port but hey ho it was £39.

Ok, i have the tv in question now.

It turns on, lasts from around 1 min to 4 mins then the backlight goes brighter for 1 second then shuts off giving me the standby light blinking 4 times.

I have read up and some say "No vertical Deflection (V STOP)" and some say an inverter problem?

I will get some pics up soon.

any ideas until the pics are up?

            Weird thing happening here.

I took the inverter boards off to take a pic for you guys.

Screwed it back in, turned the tv on and went into the options and turned the backlight down.

The tv was on for 20 mins an i thought ehh? So i thought the turning the backlight down cured it, so to make sure i turned the backlight back up to 3/4 to where it was to see if it would go off and it hasnt.

Have my ps3 on it now watching a film to see how long it lasts.

So far it has been on for 45 mins.

Now i am thinking 2 things.
            Is it

A; Lowering the backlight a little has helped it stay on as it is using less power.

            or

B; Removing the inverter boards (2 connected together via ribbon) has made a dry/cold solder join back together?

            Any idea?

            I'm stumped.

3rd possibility: The CCFL tubes are wearing out, and a lower brightness has given them a bit of life.

I had a 19" LCD monitor which did the same, but I lowered the backlight by about 5% (barely noticeable) and it lasted at least another 2 years. Recently sold it so don't know how long it will last but it does seem to help with stubborn CCFLs.

It has been on nearly an hour now (40mins with backlight as it was when i got it) and its still going?

I know what you mean coz i had a monitor too that would do the same thing except lowering it to the lowest setting let it stay on an extra 10-15 mins or so.

The good news is i have sold the sky hd box (well the hdd out of it) to a friend for £20 so its only cost me £19 to play around with this tv.

Well, good luck. Will you keep it or sell it? I would test it for a while and maybe go into the service menu and adjust the maximum allowable brightness, if the option is available...

Its to keep, our 37inch hannspree isn't the best, it already has burn marks on the screen so we want rid.

The missus has sold it before i even fix this one lol, to her nephew.

I don't want to put it on its highest setting because if i do and it wont stay on long enough to turn it back down i will be gutted.

I am pretty sure it was at this brightness before, it was around the 3/4 mark.

On a side note,,,,,, When i put the inverter board back i unplugged one of the 10 bulbs and it gave me the same 4 blinks. I tried this twice with the 2 top bulbs and it gave me the same 4 blinks,,,, i plug them all in and its been on ever since.

God knows whats going on? I am hoping its just a dry solder on one of the inverter trannys? <<dont know yet if thats the right term.

When I have a working device, I like to take voltage measurements of all the pins and document them. That way if the device goes off, you have a reference as to what pins should have voltage and how much. It makes future troubleshooting easier.

I got paid to take this. It had the typical bad STBY IC on the DPS board. Replace it and life was grand....or so I thought. I've never seen this one before; this TV will just magically turns itself on for no particular reason on earth. I did a hard reset on it (twice) clearing all data & settings out.....will still do this. Even removed the batteries from the remote....in the unlikely even there was a stuck key... Still doing it. I did not set up any of the 'smart' functions, I just fed it a source from a HTPC. It doesn't matter what input is selected.....still does it. No rhyme or reason...

I disconnect the battery fully and then reconnect it and it won't turn back on. After letting it sit for a day I plug the battery back up, and the MagSafe 3 cable and it powers on and stays ons, once I plug in a USB C cable into the port closes to the MagSafe port it turns off and the Amber light turns off and won't turn on. No water damage, nothing, I want to do a DFU restore to wipe the computer since the customer stated they did an update and ever since it just decided to not work...

                                  Sony KDL-46HX850 Can't upgrade/update firmware
                                  by dkneyle
Diagnosed this TV as having a failed main board which I've replaced with one from a KDL 55HX850. They are (supposedly) the same board.

Being 'Smart TV' it requires a firmware reboot when you swap out boards such as T-Con or main board. It starts with a black screen and flashing yellow and green LEDS, indicating it needs that firmware boot.
