$195 AUD is a terrible price for either of those.

I paid $280 for a dual core laptop and this was almost a year ago.

At these prices I would seriously consider investing in a new laptop.
I bought a compaq armada 1750 that had a li-on that still worked for 30min (2 hr original)... 6 monthes ago, a power brick hit it and wiped out the screen.

boy, it was old. pII dixon core. ran 2k like a dream though...

Man that is the second screen you cracked in one month!!!

I found a Compaq "Notebook 100" in the trash 1 year ago with an AMD K6-2. Thing is built like a tank.

As for the programmer... it's what uni gives us to use... I can't have an opinion into what I get unfortunately.

Alright. I've bought the Toshiba Tecra M2 off eBay for $195 and I shall be picking it up tomorrow from the seller's store. I did however ring the seller and ask if everything was okay (e.g. RAM slots, hinges etc.) before I bought it and he said they're all fine and if they have any problems, I can return it within 28 days for a full refund.

As for wireless, I will use c_hegge's advice and use a PCMCIA card... I'll pray that I won't get cancer from the RF signals or drop it onto the floor LOL.

...I found this Netgear PCMCIA card in my drawer... It'll do the Wi-Fi job perfectly right?

              Re: Uni laptop

              well being Netgear
it may take a while to get the right drivers - they often change chipset and keep the same partnumber.
              but it will work.

however, there is probably a mini-pci slot in the laptop for an internal modem/wifi
i'd take a look and see if there is - and if the antenna cables are there.

Did you see if you could get a Dell Inspiron 4150? It seems to fit the bill.

As for the WG511t, it is Atheros based, thus very good.

You can run aircrack on pretty much any old chip out there today...

no you cant, go look at the compatability on the site.

                      firstly forget windows.
second, a lot of chipsets wont do packet injection.

yes, you can sniff peoples data, but that's not much use unless you can inject stuff too.

Okays... I got the Tecra M2 today and currently typing this out on it LOL.

It works great! and the Netgear WG511T card is a great combination with it.

Exterior condition is okay I guess... with scratches and paint chips through wear and tear (after all it is about 5 years old lol). Screen has two teeny weeny blemishes but apart from that everything else is okay and works the part.

You're behind the times. This used to be the case. Today, so many of the chips support packet injection and monitor mode. I've had success with pretty low-end parts.

Glad you are happy with your Tecra.

Got it at last... Esc + F1 to access the BIOS. I kept trying F2 only to find that it would freeze everytime LOL.

I had to adjust the boot sequence to 1st boot the HDD otherwise it would always seek the CD-ROM drive.

open all the service covers you can see,
see if it has a mini-pci socket.

here's a hint - it looks a lot like the ram slots.

It won't help him. If you put a wireless card into an empty mini pci slot but the screen assembly has no antennas built in, it won't work very well at all...

I think it should have an inbuilt antenna... but I seriously cannot be bothered opening it up and fiddling around with it because I'll probably break something LOL.

I'm missing this driver for my Tecra and I'm not sure what it is exactly. Even installing the Intel chipset drivers didn't solve it.

So what could this driver be?
