suggestions for a cheap but sturdy case

    the title says it all.

    i would like i one:

    not flimsy
    full ATX
    2 front usb ports
    2 front firewire (opt.)
    2 ext. 3.5 bays
    2 int. 3.5 bays
    2 ext 5.25
    front audio (opt.)
    decent hard drive cooling
    looks ok with white drives

the case i have now is a bit beat up (front locking door fell off, they layout could use a bit of work)... and only having 1 firewire means i waste a header (my header bracket has 2, not one)

if i cannot get one cheap, then i will keep what i have... it will suck, but i will.

    How about this http://www.compucase.de/en/produkte/...t//6a21-1.html .
I have four of them, and they have, IMO excellent quality/price ratio. 2 120mm case fan positions and air intake dust filter.

Antec Solo. Very sturdy, yet not too terribly expensive. Could score a used one even cheaper.

Always remember, cheap and quality don't go together.....you get what you pay for. I can tell by looking that 17-dollar case will be hideously flimsy with lots of sharp edges...

          CM cases are pretty good.

If you want a case with front optical audio and more than 1 firewire (for what anyways?) you are going to have to spend some moola, or get a 3.5" or 5.25" bay adapter.

oh, ok, it didn't look too flimsy to me, id didn't have the shiny metal of doom look.

ok, ill see what i could find. only thing is the solo looks like pidgeon crap with white drives. best i found on ebay was $99 plus shipping...

            however, i found these:

            http://cgi.ebay.com/Used-Antec-ATX-C...ht_2588wt_1139

            http://cgi.ebay.com/ATX-Mid-Tower-Co...#ht_750wt_1139

the front looks kinda like what i have now, only not beat up (i currently have a chieftec)

I have the black version of one of those cases, its not an antec though, no clue who makes it....looks like the case older alienware systems came in. Sturdy case, I'll give it that.

Solo is cheaper than that on newegg.
              http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...k=antec%20solo

its a good looking case, has AWESOME HDD cooling. Yea, it will look dopey with white drives in it, but on that note, any black case will look dopey with white drives. opticals are cheap, can always get black ones later on. The case has everything on your shopping list, except 2x front firewire ports, there's only 1 up front. There's 2x 90mm fans right in front of the 4x internal HDD racks. 10,000 RPM drives stay frigid. I have one of these cases in my office. Surprised there isn't more of them used on fleabay, was a common case, lots of them around.

there are lots of them, people just love money.

but the black clashes with my white. i cannot afford both new drives and a new case

and by cheap, i mean less then $50, i am kinda strapped for cash here.

                    I swear by Antec NSK4482 (NSK4000 w/o PSU) & NSK3480 - only black & silver though.

                    Try a P180 in white? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-044-_-Product

those are Chieftec Towers rebadged as Antec. some smaller variation of the Chieftec CS-601 and CS-901 i guess

anyways.. i'm happy with my NZXT Beta
only drawback is that it doesn't have 3.5" external bays. (the bay is internally there, but nothing on the plastic front)
fixed it with 5.25" to 3.5" adapter thingys
(those you would use to mount floppy drives into 5.25" bays)

good airflow, well laid out, front USB/Audio/eSATA on the top of the case (never wanna miss that.. PITA to crawl under your desk trying to find the front USB that's right on the floor)
oh yeah... and 120mm fans everywhere..

                        http://www.google.com/products?q=nzx...l=en&scoring=p
(sry.. don't know any US price comparison sites..)

                            Oops, it looked ATX sized.

Other option, spray your drive bezels black.

and watch as your card reader's labeing is gone, and you get the wrong hole for your card and break something. not good.

Didn't know drives = card reader I thought you meant optical drives.

Anyway, no geek needs labels to tell them what card goes where.
