There are A lot of different brands, formfactors, and sizes, I have a lot of them around the house.
My beef is with those that throw them away when they need only a battery.
My second beef is the batteries going dead,,I mean dead dead.
My third beef,, well never mind.
Here and in most of the coastal waterways all around the world are these flashing light marine marker buoy's. Get up close but don't touch it and you'l see a solar power pack or UPS on it. Well here's the bad part, when they service them, new batteries,
take a guess where the old dead batteries are going? Right, to the bottom.
Over the years the battery carcasses have just been piling up under them where divers say they are used by fish and crabs as habitat. They catch those fish and crabs and guess who eats them at the crabshack.
Oh boy, I went right from beef to seafood, anyone for chicken?

anyway, back on topic, I leave my dell desktop on 24x7 except when it is not going to be used for about 5 days or more. My laptop (when it was working) I left on only as I was using it. Most pc's I recommend be on 24x7 especially with win98 (slow startup).

Do you think the caps are most sressed when powered up cold then hot then cold etc.
or just hot and a little cooler,(cloudy day), a little hotter(real scorcher), then hot, then hotter(oops a new wad of dust just came thru fan).
It seems that the leave on turn off question is really still a hard one for me.
I leave one laptop on, because it's outside and humid, wife leaves hers on 24/7 which is her perogative, entertainment system is rarely turned on,to lazy, and all others are maybe maybe not.

an apc smart-ups 1250 with some "slightly"-larger-than-stock batteries.

a ncr(rebadged exide)2kva 60v unit with 5 group 27 agm wheelchair batts in the crawlspace.its a pure sine unit.that takes care of the computer stuff and tv,and a sansui g-33000 that i use to show the teenaged boomboom punks what real power is.
its fun to knock stuff off their walls while the power is out.
on my solar setup i have 12 8d truck batts in paralell on my 12 volt whole house system.i have 3 best power patriot 850va 12v units in various places here.

what is it with those units. i have 2 420va which are the oldest UPS in the office. they do make the batteries real hot though but you definately get your moneys worth out of those UPS.

Has anyone ever read the Equipment protection policy from American Power Conv.
It states that the back ups pro, for example has a lifetime $150000. reimbursement and Ontrack data recovery.
They are technically exposed by this because the language is very broad.
Starts out, " If your electronic equipment is damaged by power line transients on an AC line while directly and properly connected to a standard APC product..."
I new there was a reason for loving these, OMG I can retire now.
