    Purpose of this covering on a Dell laptop system board?

    The Dell laptop pictured in this post has an area of the board covered with a dull silver material. It is the large 'square' area on the lower right that sits right next to the two card slots. When I removed it from my board, it felt like it was thick paper that has glue on one side, and the other side has a silvery material on it that crumbles off very easily. As it crumbles off it leaves a silvery color on your skin. Underneath of this cover, there are many chips, and there are two big chips from SMSC, which I assume are for the card slots. Other parts of the board are covered with a sheet of thin clear plastic, though this is not shown in the picture. In summary, Dell is using two very different coverings at places on the board.

    My questions are only about the silver covering shown in the picture. ..

    Why did they put this on the board? (Heatsink? Physical protection of the board?)

    Is it OK to use the board without this on it?

      I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

      Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

      I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

      The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

      With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

      Hello,

      I'm Working on replacing an Inductor on this Dell's board and I need to come up with a compatible replacement. As much as I would like to smash a comparable 2R2 in the same spot I'd like to confirm the specs before confirming a killed board. For my purposes I'd be happy with a second opinion on the replacement inductor or the actual schematics/board view. As this is a commonly used Dell Rugged in my local service area, schematics would greatly help in the future.

      I would like to share my experience about charging issues with Dell power supplies with the tech community. I am working on a Dell Inspiron 5590, Mainboard 18778-1 with charging problems. The device can be switched on and works so far, only the message appears at startup:

      Alert! The AC power adapter wattage and Type cannot be determined. The battery may not change. The System will adjust the performace to match the power available.

      The power supply unit is not recognized in the Bios and the charging process is set to "idle". I use original Dell battery, type...

      All left and right refers to looking from rear of TV (or looking from front with TV upside down)
      • TV came with vertical bars and no image. Found faulty TVS on left buffer board. Also replaced T-Con (may have damaged the original while hot air removing components, board has slight warp) and have full image but few horizontal lines on the screen. Some of the lines appears to be 2 pixel tall while others are 1 pixel tall.
      • Disconnecting left and right buffer board potentially reveals problems on both sides with different signals (unless this T-Con require jumper like Samsung FB_TRDY1&3) Fault
