    Wireless Lappy

I took the back cover off my Dell C640 Lappy and I found what I think is a wireless adapter in it. Its a daughter card with what looks like two antenna on it. Got to poke around the Dell site and try and find some drivers for it. There is still one "unknown device" listed under system and it has to be this wireless looking thing! This is going to be fun. I've never set up a wireless network on a PC. The first thing I will have to do is go to the Westel page and turn the wireless side of my DSL modem back on, and do the WEP and all that good stuff.

Ok thanks! WPA it is then. I don't have time to mess with it today. Will Ubuntu or Mint Linux work in a live disk mode to ID the chip set?

Well it wouldn't run Mint Gloria in live disk mode. I then tried Ubuntu and it did run somewhat. Next I did and install of Ubuntu and it took hours. Ubuntu wouldn't boot after the install but I could boot to Xp. Its now slow as hell too. The hard drive light is almost aways blinking. Its time. I'm just going to reprogram it on the next rainy day. Now I have to remember how to recover the space used in the old Mint install as well as the new Ubuntu install. That Lappy has been a pain in my ass since the day I got it. She works great when she works. When its sick its a total POS! It must have been built by Ford or Chrysler.

probably a bogus acpi table in the bios to sabotage Linux - it's common.

when you boot the livedisk, set the boot options to not use acpi, dmi or any other lookup tables in the bios.

I second the bad disk comment, it's an old laptop, probably seen better days by now.

It has 512 megs of ram. The Hard drive has never given any problems.

The Lappy is all reprogramed now. It works fine. I still have not figured out who made the internal wireless adapter. Someday I will.

If you have windows up and running try siw found at http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html to try to find out what kind of device you have. Doesn't work 100% to identify any hardware but works for most common hardware to identify vendor at least. And if you can just get the vendor id and all that you can start googling and find more details.

You could also get the identifiers from Device Manager:

You see VEN_8086&DEV_1075 IN in my screenshot, if you Google 8086:1075 you'll get some hints as to what the device is.
