Re: DVD drives sold at Wallmart

I just thought of another brand that i forgot about. Digital research brand.. got it at either office max or staples at the time. Those drives were nothing but problems.. Funny thing is I sent the drive back under warranty, mind you it was a "Digital Research" brand, what i got in return was an IOMagic brand.. It kinda made me laugh.. you would think that they would at least send the same brand.. Neither one of then lasted worth much..

I have seen so many bad drives in my life that i wait until the product has been out for a bit and has some reviews before i purchase any rom.. I figure at least that way i have a decent chance of getting a good rom and less of a chance of buying one plagued with problems..

as for the firmware to make it a burner, have no idea.. do not know if you can.. obviously there are different software for both but not sure if they use different sensors for reading and writing.. sorry, can not help you on that one..

It's 2025: do you know where your 5¼" floppy drives are?
        by eccerr0r
        Oh wow.

As in the other thread I was trying to revive/re-bootstrap an old Apple IIe and wasn't successful reading or writing any disk. Both drives behave similarly.

Then I was wondering, what about my PC floppy drives? I have a HH 5¼" HD drive and a combo 5¼+3½ drive. I tried formatting the disk that wouldn't work in the Apple and it didn't work in the PC either!

Then I tried a HD 5.25 disk ... it won't even touch the disk either! Just like the Apple DD disk, "Not Ready!"

Weird. Seems the PC drive is having trouble clamping...

failing hard drives after sitting for years...
        by eccerr0r
With the discussion about water pumps failing when cars sit for a while, I wonder what people have seen with hard drives. Do people see hard drives failing after being sat on the shelf for a long time unpowered versus a hard drive that's at least powered up at least once in a while, say, weekly?

Wonder if it's worth spinning up the spare spinners once in a while to keep the bearings lubricated?

Wonder how I should best keep my cold spares for my RAID "fresh" for eventual failures of the working drives. Was thinking about keeping a hot spare but that's another...

Evaluating Mechanical Hard Drives SMART Data in Linux (Ubuntu) Using the Disks Utility.
        by abajor
I've gotten into the habit of Looking at peoples Mechanical Hard drives with a Ubuntu thumb drive to boot their system.
I understand the raw values are not really uniform between manufacturers, but I have noticed that high seek and read error raw values at the very least correlate to a drive that is going to have sub par access time, and extremely slow OS booting.
The odd thing is I've often seen very high seek and read error rates on drives with fairly low on time.

Does anybody have any other takes on evaluating smart data? I've used Crystal Disk Info, It seems to present...

Dell XPS One 2720 AIO Liteon PS-3261-9DA not starting up immediately
        by cheeky2
I suspect the issue is with the power supply Liteon PS-3261-9DA as apparently they are notorious for issues with them. Has anyone else had similar issues where the PC tries to boot up a few times before finally booting up. Now I have opened up the PSU which shows no signs of any capacitors failing. I did remove one capacitor that looked to have an issue however with my peak meter it showed it was within the limits with good very low esr values which was somewhat disappointing!
I am going to put a Meter leads across the outputs to see how stable they are when it occurs to see what they are...

what to do with faulty hard drives?
        by ChaosLegionnaire
i have several dead/bricked (not detected, doesnt show up or making constant clicks of death) and faulty bad sector hard drives. im moving house soon and need to get rid of some dead weight.

i thought of selling them for parts or not working but they are quite heavy and shipping each drive internationally via local post is US$23 each. im using some of the drives as gym strength training dumbells by putting 4 of them in a box to make a 3kg dumbell. but since im moving i cant carry the deadweight with me. any ideas what to do with them that is cost-effective for ppl like me...
