My gripe with cross flow fans is the lack of cooling on the VRM.
This violates the Intel design spec, which requires cooling for the VRM.

I bought an IR temp gun, just so I can monitor VRM temps on all the boards I service. Quite a nifty toy.. you shine it everywhere, and it tells you the temps.
My wife wanted to take it out for her Ghost Hunter night with the girls, but I said no. The last thing I need is for one of my nice toys/tools to get screwed up at a party.

If you run boards with heat pipe cooling to the VRM, i.e. Gigabyte UD3 boards, the downdraft becomes a non-issue.

Uh not sure i dont have thermonitor in here but it was realy cold when i woke up this morning.

uh VRM that space around the CPU with all the caps?
i have a fan blowing air into my room and it start cooling down at night time.

I use to have a cheap hot glue gun, until the wires inside the handle shorted out. That was a experience.

Now I just have a lot hotter, larger Northern Tools hot glue gun, still a cheapie but at least the wires inside this one are thicker and shielded.

i had to re-solder one in my shop class. the heater core was shoved into that stanley pretty tight. it had micro-crimps gone bad and un-solderable thin solid wire between the core and the wall cord. i direct-wired it to the paddles on the core and since i was too lazy to go fing eletrical tape, i used duct tape to insulate my joints. the beast still works after the re-wire.

                    Re: CPU Cooler fan mod?

                    time for my cooler mod

i had an old athlon base out of a compaq presario 5000. it was wide but short, perfect for a dell dimension L933r. but i had to make the fan blow out to match the air tunnel, and when i did, the fan mounts in the mille of the edget cought the fan. so, i removed the short edge fin, removed those mount fins in the center edge, and fanned out the rest in the middle, like that zalman cooler with the external fan. pics:

original cross-section of extrusion. see the screw-slots are higher than the rest? thats what was catching the fan.

what i did to fix the issue

                    another view of my handywork

what it looks like with a fan on.

i havent tested the cpu with this on. we will see...

OLD Socket 478 custom bracket + NEW generic cooler
                        by BleedCap
I already posted this on vogons.
Its a 3d printed custom bracket for socket 478.
I used this AM4 bracket as a base design.
Its to be use with cheap generic clip based cpu cooler.

                        Reason for doing this is:
                        - Its hard to get/find a good copper base cooler. Even if you find one, the price is ....
                        - New generic cooler is cheaper and can use bigger fan (less noise)

I tested the bracket with cheap chinese horizontal cooler + fan taken from CM hyper 212 evo.
The processor that I was using is P4 2.4Ghz prescott....

Wine cooler flickers at startup and doesn't cool enough
                        by edugimeno
                        Hi there!
I have an old wine bottle cooler, it's a basic peltier cell system with a power supply built in with the controller board, with a simple display at the front door and 2 push buttons to select the desired temperatura.
Symptoms are it doesn't barely cool down, and makes a chirping noise at the board.
Both fans on each side of the peltier are (now, after much cleaning) running smooth and silent
When you turn it on, the front 7-segment display flickers for a variable time, usually like 1 minute but sometimes nothing or 3 minutes... Then turn on solid (but still some...

Wine and Beverage Cooler Control Board Repair Attempt
                        by KYBOSH
Trying to a fancy Wine and Can Beverage Cooler which wasnt working.
                        Model number AWBC242GGFD
Previous owner states that it needs a new motor.

When plugged up you hear a quick chime from the PCB alarm but it quickly dies away (trails off actually) and there is no sign of life from the unit at all.
I pulled out the main control board to give a look.

Fuses checked out okay. All diodes except one checked out. It was reading in both directions so I pulled it out of circuit and checked it again but this time it read good.
                        ...

Cooler Master ATC-S + Some other CoolerMaster Case - 2-fer in 1 Thread
                        by Topcat
This is a Coolermaster case double-header.... The reason this one didn't get added to my 'misc build' thread is becasue the Cooler Master ATC-S aluminum case....That case is a class-act way above & beyond anything in that thread! However, we have to get through a mediocre build to get to the treasure!

...but here's the two Cooler Master cases in question; both of which were drop-offs for recycling.... The one on the left, I'm not really sure what model it is. It's nothing overly special, but it is well-made. The one on the right is an ATC-S solid aluminum, best I can determine...
