My clients really appreciate having their iTunes, Bookmarks, MyDocuments, Quickbooks and other data saved.
If they want a slam-bam repair, they can go to Geek Squad.

If I have to re-install I just delete stray .exe's and scan on the machine itself.
I wipe the system partition(s) clean, then GHOST the entire disk image if a hidden partition is present.
I retain this disk image forever, so it is available when the disk dies.
I reinstall the OS from scratch using a disk that matches their license key, or I use their System Restore CD (or partition), if it exists.

If I had to copy everyone's data and pre-scan it I'd never get any work done.
I get paid to do this work.
It isn't about slam-bam quality, it is about having a pristine install.

AD is a pain in the ass and windows policies are a joke.
And it is the standard in the business world.
I'm starting another year-long contract at Intel next week, and I am not going to tell them to ditch AD because it is junk.

Viruses in mail and on client machines are very easy to spot and as long as you don't execute them....
For you and me, but not for the average user.

I know, AD is standard. You can't ditch it unless you go to unix/linux.

If you get paid for it that's all the better. Our customers wouldn't pay for that level of service. They would rather pay less because they're poor. They just want their computer to work and keep their photos and music.

Average users will find a way to get virus-ed up no matter what you do.

An interesting side effect of browsing from the VM: Firefox 3.0.11 and 3.5 both slow down to slug bait. IE6 remains snappy and full performance.

I run the AdBlock and YSlow plugins for Firefox.

          HELP! A1398 Dead,
          by Fam787
I bought a second hand Mid 2014 A1398 MacBook Pro when I lived in Australia. I'd bought it as a back-up machine because I had a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro, and realising it might one day fail, I wanted a backup machine because I don't like change.

Two weeks after buying MBP2, the seller called me to check if everything was OK with the unit, which I thought was odd. At that stage I might have turned it on a couple of times, but I'd not used it when he'd called. Over the last few years I used the machine seldomly because my original mac has been pretty OK. Every 3-6 months I'd charge it...

Janome DC3050 Sewing Machine Pedal Resistance
          by CG2
OK, this is a long shot. I got this sewing machine cheap because it's end of line, ex-display, and had no pedal. The genuine pedal costs £60, while Ebay knock-offs go for around £15. So I went for the knock-off, it doesn't work, and I'm not sure whether it's the pedal or the sewing machine that has the problem.

Now this is an electronic machine, unlike the old fashioned sort where the pedal was a big resistor in series with the power to the motor. Here, the pedal is just (I think) a variable resistor fed with a 5 volt supply, and limited to a current of 5 milliamps. Assuming that...

How to stabilize AC voltage to CNC machine
          by unimatrix93
Hello there everybody, I'm not sure if it's the right topic to ask this but I hope so.

I have a CNC machine wired to 3-phase 230V AC.

It's a smaller CNC machine with a 3500W motor, do it does not uses much power.

The problem is, when the residents come home and put load on the network, the voltage can drop to around 207V which is fine for most household items but by CNC machine stops working from this.

I contacted the electricity company but they refuse to help me solve this problem.

So I started to look around for some DIY...
