    Can I fix this?

My friend's graphics card recently burnt up and I want to fix up his card to get it running again. It's a really good card so I feel kinda sorry for him.
Anyway, we tested this card to see if it would work because in his Dell Dimension 4600, it wouldnt boot and kept shorting the PSU or something like that.
Anyway, we decided to test it in another PC that wasn't a Dell and the card let out a lot of smoke and a horrible stench.... I jumped an hid under the table while I pulled the power cable out in the same process.

The card was really hot when I touched it just a few seconds after the event. Anyway, we found two burnt components, a MOSFET and what seems to look like a tantalum capacitor maybe?
The marking on the MOSFET is 505 T60 N02R and the other thing that looks like a tantalum capacitor has marks of SK32.

The MOSFET is directly underneath SK32 in the picture.... you may not see it, but the sides of the MOSFET have turned black with carbon or something like that.....

The components look fine, but have been melted off the solder tabs in the "burning up" process.

One thing I did notice is that the card is filled with Rubycon MBZ and Rubycon YXG series caps.

I don't know what caused this... one day it just decided to screw up....I hope this can be fixed....
The PSU on the Dell is a Hipro 250W with no bad caps and the PC still works perfectly without a problem.

    Thanks.

    Re: Can I fix this?

Is that card a 9800 series Radeon card? Some 9800 cards had some sort of manufacturing defect, something in the solder used on the backside of the card, "behind" the GPU itself. If the GPU reached high temps the solder would expand a little. When the process was repeated numerous times if the cooling wasn't adequate, the solder would expand enough and the GPU got shorted and cooked.

if the mosfet in that vrm shorted through the gpu is toast.
the sk32 it a schottky rectifier.
      its probably shorted.
take it out and check the mosfets for shorts s-d
if you are lucky just the sk32 is bad.

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
        by Jane
I tried to use this method:

        Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

cracked tantalum cap on a video card. safe to apply power without fireworks?
        by ChaosLegionnaire
please refer to the attached pics. is it safe to apply power with that tantalum cap like that without causing fireworks? i dont wanna burn a hole through the pcb as the gpu chip is on the other side.

happened to me once before with a shorted mlcc. shorted mlcc on a vrm power phase burned a hole through the pcb power section but thankfully that was nowhere near the gpu chip. but the video card still ended up in the landfill anyway tho as the burn-through was not fixable.

so do let me know what u think of the chipped tantalum there. thanks....

Marian Trace Alpha sound card repair help
        by Christos Tsiligiannis
        Hello to the forum.

My name is Christos, I am new to the forum here and i am posting from Greece.

So i have this old German sound card from Marian, called Trace Alpha. To be exact i have 2 of them and i use them professionally for my small FM radio station here. The first one works like a charm, but the second one does not work at all.

To be more specific in the same exact pc with windows 7 (i even tried 32bit) the one works while the other doesn't.

So i tried asking for a schematic from the company and they would not give me one. Instead they...

        Graphics Card mounting frame
        by Kemer
Hello, I removed the graphics card from my laptop and I want to heat it in the oven. What I want to ask is, is it okay to heat the card without removing the metal mounting frame on it?

As you can see in the photo, there is a plastic (black) gasket between the metal frame and the card. It sticks the frame tightly to the card.

I previously removed the metal frame while heating it, but it is quite difficult to separate it from the surface it is attached to. If there is no problem, I do not want to remove it.

What worries me right now is the possibility that...
