A failing RTC/CMOS battery can cause certain hardware to not appear

On a Dell Studio Slim 540s, I sometimes had the problem of certain hardware sometimes not appearing under certain circumstances , such as the USB 3.0 expansion card in the PCIe slot, and even an onboard device being the 1394 controller, despite the latest known BIOS update being installed - at one stage, the computer could not display video from the video card in its PCIe slot, despite OS loading activity.
When I lubricated and reseated the devices on the connectors in question, I took the opportunity to check the RTC/CMOS battery - it was at 2.7V and warranted replacement.
So far, a new battery fixed this problem, and you may be aware that many modern PCs store PNP (Plug & Play) information in battery-backed extended CMOS RAM (2KB to 4KB, possibly more) - apparently, corrupt PNP information was causing the devices in question not to be recognized under certain circumstances.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

XPS 13 9370 CMOS battery voltage always low
    by questore
    Hi Everyone,
I have brought you a mistery item
This laptop have come with some strange faults.
    1. CMOS battery was flat 0v
    Symptoms:
    - After using the laptop and shutting down and removing the AC adapter for at least 1 minute, the laptop never turned on until EC reset (either shorting RTC or removing battery and long pressing power button)
Amp drawing was stuck at 0.005 milliamps.
    - Laptop cannot really be turned off because it autostarts about 5 sec-1 or 2 minute. (lid sw is not the problem)

After inverstigation RTCD1 diode had a low value...

ThinkPad T470p – CMOS Checksum Error Persists After Main Battery Removal (even with new CMOS)
    by Genghis_Khan
    Hello everyone,

I’m currently troubleshooting an issue on my Lenovo ThinkPad T470p (Type 20J6) and would really appreciate any insights or solutions.

    Issue summary:

Whenever I remove the main laptop battery and AC adaptor, then place them back, the system gives a “CMOS checksum error” at next boot, and the BIOS clock resets to its default time/date.

However, the RTC works fine as long as the main battery remains attached — even if the laptop is unplugged for hours. Same as I remove the battery while the AC is attached, RTC remains. Obviously,...

    CMOS battery drains quickly
    by magistertc
This problem is based on my experience with an ASUS Z390 Prime motherboard, but it appears to affect other motherboards
as well Install a new CMOS battery, configure computer, turn off computer and disconnect from AC power or switch off SMPS.
Return somewhat later and find that battery is drained, dead, or weak. Clock is wrong, other settings lost, etc.

Examine the power 'sharing' circuit -- when the ATX 3V supply is on, the computer will function normally. The computer is also
configured to support the RTC and some volatile RAM (when SMPS is on). What you may...

ThinkPad T470 does not power up with CMOS battery attached
    by rumpumpel1
I have a ThinkPad T470 that will not boot when the CMOS battery is plugged in.
With only the fan, a RAM module and a USB-C monitor attached, but no CMOS battery, it starts up normally, i.e. after about 90 seconds and two reboots, it stops with a message to press F1 to enter date & time.
If the power is switched off and a CMOS battery is inserted, it restarts as described above. However, after switching it off and on again, it does not turn on. It draws almost no current and shows no sign of life.
I used a different CMOS battery and checked the components around the battery...
