I've seen ATM machines still running Windows 98 as recent as last summer.

Also, same with a lot of industrial machines and gear. If the machine meets the daily production quota / market demand, you don't pull it down/offline to upgrade, just because Microsoft released a brand new silly OS. Do you even know how much it costs to stop production just for a few hours at some factories?

Right... but that hardware costs a lot of money and would cost massive amounts of money to replace.

You can get a new computer with Win10 for $250 or a refurbished one with Win7 for $150 and for most people those will be sufficient... so there is no reason for the average end using to still be using XP.

XP got out in 2001. But TRIM is supported even in XP if you install SSD manufacturer software such as Samsung Magician.

XP 64 are stable and decent. The drivers support is not the OS responsibility.

Do you think security updates fix EVERYTHING? You must be joking if you do. Not every security hole can be patched. And some fixes create even more security holes than before. It just takes time before someone finds the new holes, that's all. Also, it takes time for Microsoft to find and identify security bugs and holes. And then more time to come up with a fix.

I don't condemn security updates (even if it seems so sometimes), but they are probably the slowest response to a security issue. The best security you got is yourself and a fat hosts file. Even better if you have some kind of hardware firewall. Other than that, your ass is always exposed on the internet and always will be. The real question is how interested are hackers in getting into your PC vs. the next person's, and is it worth the risk?

... because Windows Vista and 7 are impeccable fortresses. Just don't ask me how many of those systems I've seen hosed by stupid viruses and malware. It's the exact same "piece of shit" as the XP days. With a "pretty" GUI, though.

Thus it's a real great target if you want to infiltrate, so the probability that a XP computer gets infectet when connected to the Interweb is damn high...

Because it does the exact same shit that newer OSes do - at least for the things I use it for.

I'm not saying I would use it for an enterprise or on an entire fleet of company's PCs. But for someone like myself (a decently-educated PC user), it works fine for anything I need it.

So yes, I will continue to use it until it can't do that anymore. And that probably won't be soon, because I own plenty of old software that's still good for productivity. This old software is not to be confused with modern-day "Apps", many of which aren't really yours.

Windows XP is the greatest OS MS ever made. I would still be using it if it was supported (drivers) on newer PCs. Fortunately there is Windows 7 that is decent.

By your reason Windows 7 is garbage because it has 250+ updates on a fresh install??

Yet I have had 0 BSOD or freezes on my primary desktops or laptops that I can remember, despite those 250+ updates.

However bugs they initially created are better fixed by them - if they have a buffer overflow problem, it's better they fix that than have antivirus make sure that overflow does not get exploited. These would be simply bandages over a real problem.
