    Re: Another RAID 5 question

Ok....I know about the RAID5 hack for XP. We know its software. However, I set my RAID5 up prior to any OS boot.

You're saying the ICH9R is all software?????

Mikey; yes, the ICH9R is all software, what it however allows you to do is create a bootable array, something which is not possible to do in Windows...

zandrax; And yea, I am booting Vista from the array so no way to make it in Windows instead...
      Also, Windows XP x64 = Windows Server 2003 x64
So I would not be at all suprised if it already supports RAID5, have not checked tho... But it does support both dynamic and GPT disks...

Sorry, I misunderstood your was a data-only array: you should agree with me that a 2 TB partition is a big C:\ drive for Windows.

Well, I don't think you like spending a whole day for a raid rebuild; moreover I think you hate spending a whole day for a raid rebuild every two days because the Matrix Raid solution proved to be prone to failure.

If you exclude the Intel fake raid, you have three chances: 1) to buy an expensive raid hardware controller; 2) to wipe out Windows partitions and install Linux or BSD (their software raid implementation is quite fast, reliable and allows booting from a boot partition on every disk) or 3) to buy a fast drive, install Windows o it and use XP Raid5 facilities for a non-system partition (you can even create more than one partition: e.g. one for programs and one for data).

        What do you like?

zandrax; I'm already looking at hardware RAID controllers...

But just as Mikey I really don't wanna go that route... I don't need high performance...
I'm also taking this up with Asus, but they have not answered my query yet...

Ok, will read in a min

Anyway, finally one of the WD's in my array decided to fail (for real this time)
Mind you I was able to run WD's diagnostics 3 times on it successfully, so that was why I thought my RAID controller was to blame, and not the HDD...

              Now to RMA this thing...
