DDR Registered, Servers, FSB - Question

    Hi,

I'm looking at some 533FSB dual Xeon server boards with Intel E7501 chipsets and they seem to all say that they will only take PC2100 max.

I know on 533FSB desktop boards that say that normally PC3200 works fine and usually by using it you can squeeze out a little better CAS Latency without getting into the more expensive memory brands.

Does the same thing work on these E7501 based boards?
Will PC3200 make it go go go??

[Reason I ask is the cost is about the same and PC3200 is more likely to be useful later on when I upgrade to another board.]

    Thanks.

Funny, because I think I have several sticks of PC2100 lying around because most of the boards want pc2700 and higher.

I think the board should work with Registered PC2700: a MSI model with the same chipset supports some of them. You could have trouble with high density sticks (e.g. some 1 GB ones), but all 512 MB and lower capacity should be recognized.

Re: DDR Registered, Servers, FSB - Question

In my experience, I have never encountered a problem as a consequence of using higher-spec memory.

I buy DDR400/PC3200 for the same reason: it can be used in a faster DDR board somewhere in the future. I do not overclock, nor tweak CAS settings beyond their ratings. If I need faster memory, I buy faster memory.

The Newegg prices are staggeringly higher for the shorter CAS latency memory. I assume this is a combination of tighter chip yield plus the ability to shake down the overclockers who are willing to pony up for the privilege.

I think so, but I ignore if all PC3200 will be recognized: my only fear is that, being newer memories, there is a bigger chance getting high density modules.

            Thanks guys.
            Your thoughts mirror mine.

I'm aware of the density concern. The boards tend to have 6 to 8 memory slots and I doubt I'll ever need more than 3gb anyway so that's easy to get around.

I've seen those that list PC2700 as an option but also many that only specify up to PC2100.

For regular P4 non-registered memory boards I just get PC3200 and it usually works. I've only had PC3200 not work on two. They were both earlier DDR chipsets (one i845 based variety on a cheap OEM board and one Granite Bay on an older Asus 'entry level' server board). I think the BIOS just didn't support the timings listed in the module's SPDs and an updated BIOS version would could have fixed that if the manufacturer cared enough to do a fix.

It's these chipsets that use Registered ECC memory I haven't played with because I don't have enough surplus parts around to experiment with them.
~ And I don't wanna buy something that won't work just for the experience.
~ I'm that crazy but not that rich.

            Does anyone know for sure?
Actually used PC3200 on an i7501 board?

Hardware firewall to block ad servers?
              by Hondaman
I found an interesting summary on a wiki that Youtube "right to repair" enthusiast Louis Rossman put up. He suggested I could use a hardware firewall and pfSense as a firewall, and use pfSenseNG as an ad blocker. Or use OPNSense as a similar alternative. Seems like it would be easy to set up, but it only runs on the hardware supported by BSD. (I'm sure the developers and maintainers of BSD are super-busy and cannot support every single piece of hardware out there, so I can't fault them.)

The trick, apparently, is to "assign IP address lists from sites like I-blocklist...

Topcat's Ultimate Pentium 4 Retro Gamer!
              by Topcat
I'll open this build with the comment that the Pentium 4 processor was probably my least-favorite CPU; even in Xeons. Netburst processors were hot-running and quite unimpressive performers considering the high clock speeds....but they were capable to a certain extent.....and are now entering the peculiar era of 'retro-ness'.

With that said; I was given THIS LITTLE JEWEL last Friday....a gaming rig built on the very CPU I liked the least....but there were some interesting things in it to say the least....and I really don't have a really good P4 retro gamer in my fleet....so....hmmm...yea...lets...

CV19 Boredom Build - X5DAL-G Build and a Gazillion Pictures
              by Topcat
Rummaging through junk cleaning up around here revealed a X5DAL-G motherboard with a pair of 3.2GHz 533FSB 2mb L3 cache Gallatin CPU's....I've had it a while, why not make some useless rig out of it. I was out of these boards for a long time, I gave them all away.....just to have someone give one to me....

Once upon a time, I used one of these as my main system, back around 2003-ish....maybe 2004....and ran it up until 2009 when I built my first Westmere system.

Anyway, this was a 'tree' freebie....it was definitely not a new one (which they send me many times)...it was...

Hello! I am having a problem with the forum in general, not a specific device repair. I am sorry if this is not the correct place to post about this!

My problem is quite simple: I got an e-mail that someone replied to one thread which I follow, but when I click the link to go to it, I get a message which says "To download from Badcaps you must register and verify your email address.
