I little dip in some shit shouldn't damage a PCB as long as it's not powered at the time and it's properly cleaned up AND DRIED before it's powered up again.

The drive could be damaged by shock (bump) or something getting in the vent hole but the USB should interface should be okay as long as it was cleaned and dried out.

you got lucky.when a wd does that i usually have to swap the headstack to recover the data for the customer.
      you got off cheap!
buy a new drive and swipe the magnets from that one.

What is it with drives and magnets?

Not a really useful post just a few comments
useful stuff has been posted and done

whew!!! ...is in order if it was critical data (to you) and you had BACKUP copies
          I suppose,
yeah clean rinse, ISO and good drying time, would be the first best shot
As for the magnet thing no idea but KC8 should know

The HDD pcb is probably removable too for proper cleaning
but the hdd (were the platers live) isn't water proof,
I don't know how likely it is water will get in there but I know its not an airtight thing

but if it cactus I guess its cactus .

Yeah Willawake, know that feeling ..they don't float and then someone dives down and gets it
(it has been turned on, not that that overly matters)

They hand it to you and ask "if you can fix?" hummmm
yep "get another phone" is the short answer.

Saltwater is a good conductor but I did have a bash..... at it...nope it died
I suppose if you wanted to go to chip level it may have been repairable.
(time money chips components and tools etc whatever, I dont have such booty here)

Bet you have had a fair few pushed your way willawake, were you live

We did have a model here awhile back that was "drink proof", anyway this dudes favorite fun thing was to "dunk it in a "schooner of beer" at the pub.
His children had given him a new case for it for Christmas or something.

          You can guess what happened.

So the story goes I heard

Anyway pentium, sounds like the drive case was ok so thats one saved
New HDD as pointed out above wont go astray...
their cheap as chips these days.
(unfortunately maybe some of the quality has gone with the price ???)

          cheers all

No idea about their effective quality, but you can look for "Reliability Survey" at storagereview.com: it's a database full of hard disk reports, classified for brand and model. You have to register in order to access, but it's worth.
As you can imagine, these surveys are useful for drives older than a year: newer drives have few entries and they are obviously listed as "working".

@ Pentium: if you don't manage to get a spare drive for few bucks, you can save some money and look for recent 5400 rpm drives - they heat less than 7200 ones and throughputs aren't bad because the real limit is the Usb interface (around 35 MB/s). Their seek times are higher, but this is not an issue for a backup drive. Since your box seems capable of dealing with 48 bit Lba addressing, you can buy any drive - no 128GB capacity limit.

they have small very strong magnets inside.
one must be careful not to let them snap together on your fingers as they can bring blood!
