    Linksys WRT54GS- Firmware hacks?

Just got a free WRT54GS V.4. Though this one supposedly has less memory, I was hoping there is a way to turn it into a good dedicated wifi access point.

I just want good wireless access to my existing LAN and firewall. I am currently using a cheap NetGear router, that only lets me connect using the WAN port. I can't go through the ethernet ports to the wireless, like I could on an old D-Link I had.

I have a WRT54GS Version 1.1. This is one great little box! It runs Linux and the source code is freely available under the GPL licence. There are a ton different firmware's for these routers. Most likely there will be one for your liking.

I recommend you check out www.linksysinfo.org and their forums. You can find out alot more information about different firmware's there. I use HyperWRT Thibor firmware. It sticks to the original firmware quite heavily. However there are many small nice additions and fixes. Another firmware I recommend for you to check out is Tomato, this one sounds pretty cool.

Have fun with your new toy .

      I use Sveasoft myself

Tho they do have a pretty bad reputation, but I've always been happy with it, have one medium sized hotspot setup with it, covering ca 2 square km...

I would suggest either Tomato odr DD-Wrt, i think both firmwares should support the options you are looking for.

Personally, o prefer Tomato, as it is fast and probably one of the most stable os for this box.
Checkout the appropriate hompages if your model is supported.

really a side point to watch out for,
there was one version 5 that used in house firmware
(not sure if that was GS or just G..or both)

But yeah mine are doing fine... one's on HyperWRT the other is stock at the moment

          Just to be safe,
make sure you update firmware via a cable directly between computer and the WRT

you dont want to brick it

Tomato new one on me I'll have to look into it Thanks Gonzo, shadow
          (I haven't look at linksysinfo.org in a while.)

          Cheers

AFAIK DD-wrt does have a scimped down version even for the versions with proprietary firmware.
But a lot of features had to be removed, as this special units does have less memory and less flash memory too.
