    Power Supply!!!

Hi there I am currently having a 350watts power supply while I am using a P4 2.4GHZ intel original. Is this power supply enough or should I upgrade it to a higher power supply? And will upgrading it have any bad effects on my PC and what damage can the 300watts power supply do to my pc IF its not adequate???

    Re: Power Supply!!!

If it's a good one, there's no need to upgrade. If it's a crappy one, you're lucky that it's still running.
Don't upgrade to a higher PSU, but to a BETTER one.

Worst case is damage to any of the system's components in case it fails. Worstest case is damage to EVERY component.

    What brand is yours?

      as above
A 350 Watt "Quality" supply is going to do a better job then a supposedly 500 Watt piece of crap

      What Brand and Model,

There are some that are fine supplies with a recap but some are just pieces of crap waiting to kill your system.

      Please list details

      cheers, welcome

You can't trust the power ratings on junky brand power supplies. They may be able to deliver that rated power for a few femtoseconds. Some internal pix of power supplies that have been posted here had me scared to draw half of the rated power for any significant amount of time (and I worked in power supply design, manufacture and tech support for almost 25 years).

          Re: Power Supply!!!

Unless you are getting problems you can stick with it.
There are many commercially sold systems with FSP AKA Fortron or other good psu`s out there.
Any way, if you want a new psu for safeties sake, i would recomend a Seasonic S12 Series one, may be in the range between 330 to 500w.
But this is only recommended, if your system is featuring the fore pin p4 12v molex connector, as any new designed psu has it`s most power at the 12v rail.

              Re: Power Supply!!!

well cant find any ref directly to infinity as a psu...cases plus psu yes.
So can only assume a generic of some kind
(there is an enermax infinti but not at that wattage)

As to damage from the psu, yes it is possible ....some are known MB killers but really depends on the psu

from what you say, rebooting is one symptom that caps can cause but thermal is of course heat related.
(was it some warning on CPU temp? just wondering)

if the supply has been used for some time it could have blown caps and your are also saying starting it is an issue.

The short answer is change the psu (to preferable a new good quality unit ) and see if it still happens.

if it does work ok with a new one, you know the psu is either failing (probably caps wise) or not up to the job...failing is more likely
(you could crack it open and have a look at the condition of the caps)

If you still have the same issues them its most likely some issue with the MB system
caps can look fine and still be failed.

upgrading (as gonzo said) if you can find one at a decent price, but there are others so have a read around the forums see what good and whats crap.

if you dont want to spend the money out right see if you can borrow one from a known working system

              (thats compatible of course)

My thought is psu failing/failed but thats noway conclusive!
(I dont know all the details or history of the box)

              HTH

              Cheers

                Re: Power Supply!!!

In that case, i would say the PSu right place to start troubleshooting.
If the systems won`t come back after a reboot, this is a clear sign of a bad PSU.
Probably the standby circuit is bad or encountered badcaps.

                    Re: Power Supply!!!

Don`t get me wrong, i do not say, that it IS the PSu, as it is obvious that i can`t do that without having it examined.

But from the little i know about your problem, i think it is very likely that it is the issue.
