would there be a risk of using 3.6V batteries to replace the 3V batteries? Those I can get for a decent price. and 1/2 AA bat. holder is dirt cheap.

7.2v instead of 6? you would need a schematic to see what it does with it.
if it just pushes it into a 5v regulator then fine, but you need to be sure.

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
          by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

Older Macintosh Magnetek power supply ressurection
          by mitchw
Hi, I have an old PowerMac 8100 power supply from a company MagneTek.

I need some advice repairing it. I am not sure if I got the right SMPS controller IC.

When I got it, the primary side was completely blown, both MOSFETs blown, control IC blown its cap off, etc.

I slowly got it to work, first I disconnected all the visually blown and shorted components, until all there was left was a standby power supply. There was a major darkening in the standby area, but it was caused by an overheating resistor (which still tests good - 68 ohms). This was caused...

Magnum IA.100 Amplifier Switches on, No Output, Possible Input Side fault?
          by flibidy
I have here a Magnum IA.100 which belongs to my parents.

The unit powers on & when the relay kicks in, you get a pop from the speakers (this might sound weird but is usual behavior for this amp). However, you get nothing coming through it from any of the inputs & no pops and crackls from any of the controls.

Because of the sound from the speaker when the amp turns on I have assumed that the output section probably works but I could be wrong & I'm not sure how to test that side of things further.

Power Macintosh 7200/120 PC Compatible Restoration
          by TechGeek
So here we go. The system featured here is a Power Macintosh 7200/120 computer with a PowerPC 601 CPU and 24MB of RAM. It was built sometime in 1996 and appears to have been in use between 1997 and 2007, with most activity ceasing by 2005.

The system was also ordered with the PC Compatible option, which, in this case, is a 12" long PCI card with an entire PC compatible system on it. It has a 100MHz Pentium (i586) CPU, 8MB or 16MB of onboard RAM, an ATi Mach/64 video card, and a Sound Blaster Vibra16 sound subsystem.

It was checked into a computer repair shop (presumably...

          Macintosh Quadra 840AV PSU
          by nicktasios
I had my Quadra 840AV (which I recapped and had working) plugged in for some time without using it and randomly decided to turn it on today. Unfortunately it did not turn on. After checking the PSU, I found out I was not getting anything from 12V, only from the 5V rail. After a few minutes, I removed the PSU and plugged it back in the electrical outlet and it suddenly started making a weird sound and soon after smoke started coming out. I quickly unplugged it. I opened it up but on first instance I didn't see anything out of the ordinary really. I later turned it back on and one of the MOVs blew...
