    Win7 Emulation in Linux

If I install Win7 in VirtualBox or KVM, will Windows be tied to that exact hardware? Can I take the VM and move it to another machine at some point without having to re-activate Win7?

I bought a replacement board identical to the one Win7 is licensed on. But of course it failed. I have two more identical boards in my basement. Running out of acceptable hardware will not happen for quite a few years, hopefully.

But I am looking forward to that day when I cannot find any hardware, and I have to use emulation. Does anyone have experience with this?

    wine works well,
and most VM's let you create a virtual hardware setup.

Which emulators should I try? I have a couple of AMD 5350 test machines, how much RAM will I need? (I have plenty of DDR-3 1600 MHz lying around the house, and hardware that uses it.)

I do have experience with Crossover, it works well with Office 97 and 2003, I should probably install it immediately.

Also, I have a KVM switch. On the "other side" of the KVM I have an old i3-3245 system with Mythbuntu 12.10 (I used it to watch television with the HDHomeRun Dual back in the day). I never use it anymore, maybe I should scrap that machine. Maybe my "main" machine (I have two more motherboards I bought new) will now become the "backup" machine (like the i3-3245 used to be). My new "main" machine will be a nice new Ryzen machine like the one suggested in this thread: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/genera...-advice-needed.

I have CDs of Win98 first AND second edition, maybe I could replace the i3-3245 machine with an AMD 5350 machine to "play around" with virtual machines. Could I tell the VM to pretend I have the same bridge chips (as an example) that my 32-bit single-core AMD Athlon 2900 has? This could be interesting.

        start by going to wine-hq
        https://www.winehq.org/
        and installing the beta version.
because it's faster than VM methods.

also before you start, make sure your linux is setup for "MultiArch".
that is the ability to run 32bit software on a 64bit system.
because the sad joke is a lot of windoze stuff is still 32bit.

as for VM's you need to research it, VMware was best but it's gone all cloud-shit thanks to broadcom

          win7 home iso? can I get 10?
          by eccerr0r
Well I think that I have a GTX660Ti that's dead but I think I should give it one last try with its original OS and drivers: win7 home premium. While I can't stomach using win* of any type (I'm 100% Linux these days) I think I have to give benefit of the doubt to drivers, etc.

So... I have the original CoA for Win7 home premium and it's an OEM license. And I have the whole computer that the GTX660Ti came in (it was reportedly working too), minus the original hard drive, what could I download and run the machine temporarily to verify the GTX660Ti works with Windows or not?

Janome DC3050 Sewing Machine Pedal Resistance
          by CG2
OK, this is a long shot. I got this sewing machine cheap because it's end of line, ex-display, and had no pedal. The genuine pedal costs £60, while Ebay knock-offs go for around £15. So I went for the knock-off, it doesn't work, and I'm not sure whether it's the pedal or the sewing machine that has the problem.

Now this is an electronic machine, unlike the old fashioned sort where the pedal was a big resistor in series with the power to the motor. Here, the pedal is just (I think) a variable resistor fed with a 5 volt supply, and limited to a current of 5 milliamps. Assuming that...

          File server with PLEX?
          by Hondaman
          Hello,

Down through the years I have tried to have more convenient storage and backup. Recently, I have used a USB hard drive enclosure plugged into the back of my WRT-AC1200 router. But when I put photos on that drive, my local Win7 machine grinds to a halt. It takes a long time for thumbnail images to show up in Win7 File Manager, because I may have hundreds of photos in any directory I want to view. So I need to put the photos on my local Win7 machine. But I am running out of space.

Is the router giving the thumbnails from the USB drive enclosure to the Win7 machine...

What OS are you running these days? I am down to 3 Windows workstations and one Windows Server on my LAN, everything that doesn't have a windows-specific need has been moved to Linux. Printing abilities with my large document centers are Linux's kryptonite; the reason for 2 of the Windows machines. The third machine still has Win7 on it, and isn't connected to the outside world. It has tons of software on it I use for diagnostics and updating various hardwares. My main rig is still Win10 Enterprise, so I had to vote Win10 in the poll...but I have overwhelmingly more linux machines than windows...
