Good that you got is solved. $4 isn't too bad.

Yes, I hope it will serve the purpose every time when needed... I noticed that it had much more data when I queried it than my last Lucent modem had.

This US Robotics... well, they seem to actually use Conexant chips printed with US Robotics logo in their PCI modems. The driver package that I downloaded from USR site contained all the Conexant files.

This modem is HSP or soft one, but I don't mind, it doesn't affect the PC at all when it comes to performance/speed. If it works, I won't be repairing it.

The only problems I've ever seen with win-modem types is them not working under Linux but that was quite a long time ago.

Still the case. Conexant's have a proprietary 3rd party driver for a fee ($30?) but that's old and a PITA to use. I'd get a serial modem (not USB, those are also winmodems oftentimes) and be done.

Probably the modem suffered lightning or some power surge. If you only use it for a backup connection, just leave it unplugged unless you are actually using it.

Software modems suck on Linux. External ones through the serial port work great. Never tried an internal hardware one. I don't think I have any aside from ISA ones which are too old!

Yes, that might be the case. However, I can't have it unplugged becaue I use its PHONE jack to connect my desktop telephone to it (and therefore to the phone line via the line cable plugged to the LINE jack on the modem). It is used very rarely for connecting to the Internet, so I'll leave it be. We'll see how long this one is going to last (my Lucent was over 10 years old and in a computer).

ASUS PRIME B550M-A AC weird behavior
                    by RotVik
Hello, I need a little help

I got an ASUS PRIME B550M-A AC Motherboard, bad BIOS, it wont display or boot, unless I did CMOS Restart first, after that It will boot but if I modified the configuration of the bios and saved it ,again no image

I got the BIOS .CAP file from ASUS official support, used a tool called ASUS CAP to BIN, and programmed it to the IC, soldered to the board and got it to boot correctly, all the way to Windows, but now the CPU fan stays at full speed all the time and if I try to power it off with power button it will restart instead, and there are...

Weird behavior on 3.3V rail of a CORSAIR CX600
                    by bimole
                    Hi,

A colleague gave me an apparently ill CORSAIR CX600.
He told me that he heard a banging noise, and smelt the magic smoke.
After tearing down the PSU, no burnt component, everything seems OK, but the PSU often refuses to stay ON. When shorting PS_ON to GND, the fan spins a bit a finally stops. No output voltages.

I tried to treat some apparently bad solder joins and finally it seems to work OK... on the 12V and 5V rails!
It's another story on the 3.3V rail...

I have some devices to test deeply PSUs (scope, AC source, electronic load)...

Thinkpad W541 (20EG) Q1, weird behavior after SPI flashing (3 flashes of power button LED)
                    by dj-bobr
                    Hi,
I kindly ask for help with Thinkpad BIOS/ME repair.
Thinkpad W541 board bought from Aliexpress, so I have no service tag nor S/N. It is 1GB version Q1 (K1100 nVidia GPU). BIOS 2.23, EC 1.13, ME 9.1.32.1002.
It worked fine until I tried to remove whitelist.

                    Steps taken:
                    - battery out, CMOS coin cell out, laptop disassembled; I kept LAN/USB subboard connected
                    - i took SPI programmer (CH341A with 3.3V mod) and SOIC clip and did a full backup of all SPI flash chips (SPI1 and SPI2 - BIOS, EC, ME, GbE; SPI3 - video BIOS; SPI4 - Thunderbolt fw) for several...

A2141 Screen replacement. Boots screen freezes on Apple Logo 1/3 status bar unless connected to second monitor.
                    by abajor
                    Having this very weird issue.
The owner of this laptop complained about screen being intermittent when opening and closing, and has been using the laptop on a thunderbolt video connection since the screen failed.

I swapped with a working screen from an A2141 waiting for parts.

The Os exhibits this weird behavior where it boots to to 1/3 the status bar, then it makes the boop sound. It's at the log in but for whatever reason the desktop isn't loaded.

The laptop boots fine into recovery mode. I updated from Monterey to Sonoma and the laptop still has...

Weird Display Behavior -- LG 49UH610V
                    by Gjackson
                    Hi,

I've got an LG 49UH610V that has some weird display problems. The LCD panel itself doesn't seem to be broken but It keeps alternating between a good image and a bad image around every 2 seconds. (so it seems fine for 2 seconds and then switches bad for 2 seconds and keeps alternating, see video attached)
At the top of the screen there is a pink horizontal line which isn't visible in the video, this line never goes away it's always there no matter if the screen is currently "good" or "bad".. when I disconnect the left side of the Panel from the T-con,...
