    Odd Motherboard issue

Hello, I have been experiencing an odd issue with a Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394 motherboard where screen resolutions at 800x600 and above seem to have weird interference on the VGA display, which goes away during low CPU usage... The best way I can describe it is faint horizontal lines flickering like TV static visible on dark colors, and dark text seems to blur and jump, all in sync with CPU or Hard Drive activity, possibly gets less intense when machine warms up... Also, tons of noise on Soundcard/TV Tuner audio also in sync with CPU usage.

I have recapped all large capacitors with new Rubycon MBZ's (Older ones were MBZs and Sanyo WG series), I tried three different ATX supplies, a 450Watt, 300Watt and a brand new (overkill) EVGA NEX750B 750Watt, no difference, tried two CPUs Athlon XP 2600+ and Athlon XP 3200+, same situation.

    Voltages are as follows:

    VCore: 1.67 to 1.69
    3.3: 3.31 to 3.36
    5V: 4.75 to 4.83
    12V: 12.49 to 12.610
    +5Vsb: 5.05 to 5.16
    CPU Vid: 1.850

I went to great lengths to diagnose this, even ran the board on my desk and connected the Oscilloscope to look at VRM's MOSFET Gates (All were being driven properly), I checked voltages, and ripple and found that the 5V and 3.3V rails had 60mV+ ripple, and oddly enough the 3.3V rail had disturbances (periods of drooping voltage) that aligned with the flickering, not sure if that is related to the issue or not.

This board has two phase VRMs, each phase has two identical MOSFETs on high and low side (70N03S), 180degrees out of phase, uses the FAN5091 to regulate them.

I'm at my wits end here and the only thing I can think might be causing this is failing VRM Mosfets, because when I swap out the XP 2600+ for the XP 3200+ the system becomes unstable and freezes or resets randomly, but works fine if I reduce system bus to 100Mhz (reducing CPU clock to 1100Mhz).

Edit: I should also mention I tried upping CPU voltage, AGP voltage, DDR voltage, reducing DDR speed, reducing AGP from 8x to 4x, swapped several different DDR sticks, no dice.

Should I replace the MOSFETs, and if so, should I use originals or MOSFETs with lower RDS(on)?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance,

    Richard.

Try a different video card. Your problem is with the display but you don't talk about what video card you are using etc. Also the memory on those AMD boards can be picky about the DDR memory you use so after you have verified your video card is good check your memory.

Video Card is an nVidia MX440 AGP8X with 64MB... If it's the video card, why would the system random lock/reset under a CPU with a higher Clock/FSB & TDP?

Also, I have tried 4 different sticks of DDR-3200, three different brands, all test good with Memtest86+.

Edit: It might also be worth mentioning that this noise is NOT visible if I VNC (Remote View) the machine, it's only visible on VGA Display (LCD or CRT) and higher refresh rates seem to reduce the noise slightly.

Because you video card is bad for starters.

Your having video issues, why on earth would you go right to looking at the motherboard as the problem. "KISS" (Keep IT Simple Stupid) if video is the issue focus on video first even if you suspect problems in other area's.

          bingo
          mx440
          i had a few mx420 & 440 with a bad cap on them.
not blaming the cap maker - they are pretty old!
check the caps, there's only 2 or 3.

Listen it's not the video card, I tried a PCI VGA card same issue... CPU activity should not be manifesting itself on the VGA signal, unless there is some issue with the card's power from the motherboard. Both Video Cards test out fine, no artifacts or glitches, just analog noise modulated to the CPU. Also, the CPU "noise" isn't manifesting itself only on the VGA signal but the Audio from Onboard Audio & PCI TV Tuner (Sound and Picture).

As for Bad Caps on MX440, it was recapped years ago with Rubycons.

Also I forgot to mention, the 5V and 3.3V pins on the ATX connector are discolored (darker, almost pencil lead color, others are silver) and the plastic yellow tinged around them.

that would sound about right for your issues, 5v and 3.3v is sagging. thats why even the HDD affects it (on the 5v rail). just to get full 3.3 and 5 you have to have a higher current to get past the high resistance connections.
i have a story like that, we had a computer with a failing HDD (or so the SMART read errors pointed too), but when we pulled the HDD out the SATA power connector was unused but instead they had connected a PATA power connector to the unit (it had both) so we pulled the HDD and connected it to power by the SATA power connector and ran a wiping program using teh badblocks program on Linux, the read errors were gone by the time the wipe was done. the pins on the PATA connector were lead coloured too.

that connector must be pretty warm.
it will get worse over time & then burn up.

i'v not seen it on the 20way before,
but i had it happen on the 12v cable once.

                    Re: Odd Motherboard issue

I just replaced the ATX connector with a new one from another board, voltages improved 200mV on 5+ but still getting the same issues. Seems like the warm connector was just another symptom, possibly making things worse, but alas, not the cause.

I'm starting to wonder if the VRMs packing it in, getting less efficient and drawing more and more current from +5.

Maybe you have leaky FETs in VRM or the controller is faulty?

Alright so I decided to bite the bullet and whip out my heatgun and replace all four VRM MOSFETs (NOT an easy task) - which were 70N03S (70 Amp, 5mOhm RDS(on), 68W TDP) and replaced with 95N03LT (75 Amp, 5mOhm RDS(on), 115W TDP)...

Seems to have resolved the issues, and I notice my VCore isn't fluctuating as much anymore also...

                        Thanks everyone for the input

                          Hi everyone 😀,

I'm here today to ask for help with repairing the motherboard of a Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH.

To give you some context, I'm passionate about computer repair so much so that I've invested in a lot of tools and started practicing on dead and old hardware. I've been learning how to solder and desolder components, mostly focusing on phone repairs.

Recently, I bought a broken Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH for just €150, and there are two main reasons why I made this purchase:
                          1. I already own the exact same model, but its plastic chassis is badly damaged.

                          Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious issue with my ASUS Zephyrus GA401I (4 years old, worked perfectly until recently). The system is lagging heavily, even in the BIOS, and is charging extremely slowly (a few percent in hours), making it nearly unusable. I suspect a motherboard or power delivery issue.

                          Symptoms:
                          • Severe lag across the system, including BIOS navigation.
                          • Slow boot times and unresponsive performance in Windows.
                          • Battery charges very slowly (e.g., ~5% in 2–3 hours).
                          • No error messages or BSODs, just extreme sluggishness.

                          What I've Tried:

Hello everyone, I have an HP DV6 DAOLX6MB6F2 REV: F motherboard. The issue I'm facing is that sometimes the motherboard doesn't turn on. I've checked the voltages for the power on button panel, and they seem to be okay. Right now, it's working perfectly fine, so I can't pinpoint the exact problem. I have the HP DV6-DV7 Quanta LX6_7 (Liverpool) DAOLX6MB6F2 Rev 1A.pdf schematics, a multimeter, and a 5A power supply. If anyone could guide me on where to start checking first, I would greatly appreciate it. This is my first experience with this. Thank you.

                          Hello,
I'm having an issue with the Samsung 740n's phase control setting. When I use the automatic adjustment, it sets the value to around 54 (with a range of 0-100), and the picture looks clear and sharp. However, after some time—like after playing a game—the text starts to look blurry. When I auto-adjust again, it may increase the value to 80, and everything becomes sharp once more. Yet, after a while, whether it's a few hours or a day later, the same blurriness returns, and I have to adjust it again.

I'm using the Samsung 740n monitor drivers instead of the default plug-and-play...

                          Hello everyone,

I am reading temperatures above 105C (221F) on mosfets PQL8104 and PQL8103 and the board is operating fine until it goes above 105C and then it shuts down. Cpu is ok.

So can't figure it out. Attached is photo of motherboard, the schematic section showing the culprit mosfets and the whole motherboard schematic. I changed PL8101 thinking it may be bad, same results. I tested out of circuit caps PC8117 and PC8118 and they measure fine.

So I am at a loss to know what else to check to try and identify the source of the problem
