DVD drive looks like a CD drive to windows

Well I would of liked to of added this to my other thread but since the edit button vanishes I was unable to do so.
Anyways, I have a creatice DVD drive installed and while the bios and device manager sees it as a dvd drive, My computer, windows explorer and any other file viewer sees it as a CD drive and thus inserting a dvd will do nothing when a DVD is inserted, the system won't even detect a disc. If a CD is inserted, everything runs fine and there are no problems. Do I suspect drivers or registry?

    This happens sometimes under XP.
    M$, don'tcha just love it?
Happened on my XP MCE system.
Usually uninstalling the device and rebooting clears it up.

Re: DVD drive looks like a CD drive to windows

If the drive came with a driver disc, try installing those drivers (if you haven't already). The drivers could also not be compatible with XP; designed for earlier Windows like NT4 and 2000. Check the manufacturer's website to see if there's an updated XP version.
Also make sure you're using the correct driver for your XP version. Home Edition, Professional Edition and Media Center Edition sometimes require DIFFERENT drivers to make a device work!

I had a problem with a DVD-Writer drive I bought for my XP Home machine. XP saw it as a DVD-ROM rather than a DVD writer. In fact, it still does - I can only burn DVDs through the latest Nero!

If I pop my ubuntu live dvd in the drive at POST it will boot off that so there goes your theory.
I didn't install any specific drivers. I installed the drive and I got a balloon telling me that a Creative DVD2240E DVD drive had been found and that it was installing the drivers.

                      I don't use daemon tools.
I do have an older version of Nero installed though.

Well, try updating your Nero drive database.
Sometimes, if you burned a CDR in a DVDRW, you get this problem.

There is a patch available for that version of nero that will update it. It probably won't help but you could give it a shot.

Are you trying to use Nero under a non-admin account? If so, you might need to log in as an administrator and install a program called Nero Burnrights (available from Ahead's website) before Nero will work for you.

Did the drive ever appear? (is this a new combination of parts?)

I started with Nero 5.5 but i eventually had to abandon it when it no longer supported the newer drives.

I found a file in Nero's folder called 'CDROM.CFG' and was able to replace it with a version from Nero 6.0 (available for download at the time). This is the configuration file for Nero and any drive not appearing here will not be recognized. BTW, you can manually edit this file.

Eventually i bought an even newer drive and the trick no longer worked. I upgraded to Nero 6.
                                .

And where can I find that patch?
I don't see mention of Nero 5 anywhere on their site and google just gives me websites for keygens.

We are going to have to wait until I do some repairs before I can try it.
After an overclock (increased frequency from 100mhz to 166mhz to get the system to run at the Athlon 3000+'s speed of 2.2 GHZ) I was checking system temps and I then discovered that my video card was roasting at 82 degrees (celsius) due to a fan failure!
Making it even worse, one of the mounting clips on the sink had broken off and the video chipset was essentially without a heatsink for I don't know how long.

Well the patch now allows me to burn dvd's but the drive is still seen as a cd drive. This dirve is being too much of a hassle than it's worth. I'm going to have to replace it with a dvd burner as soon as I get the money.

                                        Problem solved.

**For those who are wondering. I replaced the fan on my video card, applied new thermal paste and replaced the damaged heatsink clips with nuts and bolts. She's cooler now but 62 degrees is still too high for me.

I had been using this hard drive for a while, and it worked fine only going back and forth between 3 computers.

Plugged it into an older computer that happened to have a really loose USB port. Light flashed once and died, never to be powered up again. Not sure if it's relevant that the USB port was loose.

Anyway, now it doesn't power up at all, it's been sitting on my desk for years and figured what the heck, nothing to lose as I'm not going to pay someone to fix it, maybe I can learn something from it.

Removed the case, figured I would look for anything...

bug of the month: write caching setting for the hard drive in device manager
                                          by ChaosLegionnaire
i recently bought a new wd re4 2tb with 2014 datecodes. when i got around to testing it tho in victoria hd tester, the write speed was very slow at 14 mb/s with a 256 sector transfer size. when i increased the transfer size to 1024 sectors, the write speed increased slightly to 44 mb/s. read speeds and sector verify speeds were fine and at normal speeds.

so i just ass-u-med the drive's poor performance was due to it being an advanced format drive and i was using it on winxp. when i tried cloning my system disk to this wd re4 2tb drive and writing to it in linux, the write speed...

Drive SMART status not showing up through RAID controller?

                                          Hey guys,

I have an Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 motherboard with AMD RAIDXpert. I set up a 1000GB RAID1 array on it. This was about 8 years ago. Every once in a while, a power outage or something would knock one drive offline and degrade the array. After a reboot the drive would be back online and it would rebuild just fine.

Recently, a drive dropped offline and the array became degraded. I figured it was no big deal and rebooted then set it to rebuild overnight. The next morning I took a look and both drives had dropped offline at 70% rebuild. Uh oh.

                                          I rebooted...

Choosing proper SSD drive for HP 15 - bs0xx board

                                          Hi guys,
I have hp15 laptop, the model exactly as described here:
                                          https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebo...x/td-p/8048592
Picture of the SSD slot is attached.

The thing is that I have M.2 2280 SSd drive Kingston A2000, SA2000M8/250 GB.
It doesn't fit, so it seems that this slot on the motherboard is actually for SSD drives with B key, which are pretty rare nowadays, since Nvme are dominating.
When fitting drive to slot normally electronics and labels should be faced upwards to me while installing...
