i noticed while using my 270 yesterday the 10k raptor is running at 50c, hope it holds in there. chegge what was the cpu in your poly modded system? I think thats a awesome mod how is the stability?

Has something been pulled off C121 in pic 2, or is that just where the soldering iron has disrupted the solder on an empty pad?

This. Panny FJs do seem to hold up better than ruby MCZs in these PCs, but they can still fail. The first one to go is usually the one in between the DIMM slots and AGP slot (probably because the two MOSFETs next to it get hot enough to discolour the PCB under it. The UCC PSC Poly I put there should handle it, though.

i have never once seen a 270 have bloated cpu caps if they are panasonic

I've seen a lot of them, as well as many of the Dell toasters (SX270, SX280, GX620/520/745/755 USFF) roast pannies..... Pannies are tough, but not indestructible!

nice, yeah at the school i usually just desolder caps from other dead 270s so at least they match, i have never once seen a 270 have bloated cpu caps if they are panasonic, on some the big 1500uf near the agp slot pannys seem to actually raise off the board instead of venting.

My personal 270 is a SSF with the following. 2GB ram, 3.4Ghz Pentium 4 Northwood, 128 MB FX 5200, 74GB WD740 Raptor. Win7.

That's pretty much what I've found. They seem to last darn near forever, as long as they don't cook the caps.

EDIT: I just realised in that 3rd last photo that I missed an 820uF nichicon HM. It wasn't bulged but was from the defective era (2003 dated). The replacement was a Ruby MBZ.

you know what I find amusingly ironic though, I STILL see a lot of GX270's and I still sell a lot of kits for them. These are systems that should be dead and gone by now.....but they're just stallions in the workhorse world...

Yeah, the soldering isn't too bad. It was more the fact that they used such low quality replacements (and possibly even left two caps bulging). It looks a lot better now that I've polymodded it.

This time, it's a GX270. It's not as bad as some of the others I've seen on this forum, but there's plenty of room for improvement. This PC is from a business client of ours, who needs it to drive some older equipment...


The board. Note the mis-matched caps all over the VRM low. The originals were Ruby MCZ (one of which is still leaking), but guess what the guy who recapped it used as replacements...

And it's no better elsewhere. not only do we have cheap generic Chinese caps, but GP caps at that.


I've seen worse soldering than that, but at least clean your flux of, guys...

I'm thinking I might give this one a partial polymod. These PCs often cook Rubycon caps, so I think it's about the only way I won't have to re-do it eventually.
