    Re: Hard drive manufacturers dwindling

That`s bad, i have had similar problmen with a Maxtor drive. After two day`s it developed bad sektors until w2k refuses to run. I recovered my data and zerod it, as i thought it would not be a real defekt. After a few weeks the same story, but Maxblast can`t find any defekts anymore. Well, i put it in my Linux box without a /etc/fstab entry. After a few monts, maxblast was succesufll in giving me a RMA authorization code.
In generall, i think leaving a hdd without any acces running, should degrade it a little faster. If any seriouse problem is existant, i think this should not need mutch time. Newer models have optimized firmware, wich are moving the heads frequently, to avoid rapid waer out. Any way, i would try it.

Just don't hit it, they have sensors that go off if it's been exposed to too many G:s of force...

Atleast it's in the SMART spec, it's up to them to include it... But I think they all have it, evil bastards :P
