keeping up with the changing times...

I've been thinking, with tablets slowly taking over the world, that might be big business in repair (in some cases it already is)

windows 8, on tablet, might technically (and usually as with microsoft products) be vulnerable to viruses. The down side I see is people loosing access to the OS and am unable to save files (in some cases)-I know some SSD's are mini-PCI-E FF or proprietary.

has anyone had any experience with tablet or phone devices? My first attempt was an ipod 5th gen. swapping the hard drive out. did so just fine. Second was a 3rd gen ipod touch (screen replacement). Following directions from youtube, not long after I started taking it apart, one ribbon cable was REALLY glued to the back of the case, and I accidentally tore it off the motherboard. All further attempts caused it to break more. Do you really have to use a heatgun on these things?

I'm curious if any of you have experience with tablets/touchphones. Successess and failures. Really curious to know. The desktop industry is slowly dying. While I believe it will never be dead, you never know. In the future tablets might have a dvi/usb keyboard port or dock for a monitor and be powerful enough to run high end games. I'm thinking 'no cheap laptop could play HL2', but ivy bridge PDC I messed with able to play it just fine (PDC 2020M-I believe intel 3000 or 2500 graphics)

I think it is silly for smartphones and tablets not to include a memory card slot.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

I have been toying with tablets for about 3 years. These are mostly Android, and one Win7 tablet.

For Android, you can put it into a "Developer" mode, and then it can be accessed on a PC via a USB cable. I've only done this with Linux, but I guess you could use Windows. You need to install the Android SDK tools:

      http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html

The one Win7 tablet (I have 2) did develope a ribbon problem. I tore the touchscreen ribbon when opening it, and a tablet is useless without a touchscreen. I planned to attempt to fix it using conductive tape, but never got around to it. Here is what I got to fix it:

We all do, but while companies such as Apple can keep their fans buying a whole new unit to upgrade the mem' then they are laughing all the way to the bank. Its the biggest reason each smartphone I ever bought was a Motorola.

Tablets? it's a conspiracy by the manufacturers... now they have an excuse to make things as small as possible "but we don't have enough space/money to put in upgradeable components, want it to be a half inch thicker and cost $100 more? Then that person over there wouldn't like it because it's too expensive and too fat... One size fits all." just to make you buy a whole new tablet when the newer, snazzier model comes out...

Yes. On mobile phones and any other devices where the manufacturer likes to use lots of double sided tape, you need a hot air station on pretty much 90% of repairs.
