    dropping windows

done with windows its off of all my boxes, laptops, servers, and HTPC's
hoping to get rid of the windows-nes of my computers with by geting rid of the stickers using this methode.
now the reason behind this is that windows just can't do what i want how i want but linux and unix can! osx is out of the question because i want to keep my hardware.
    even made an mockup error

so any tips for making things easier for me?

You must have a sad, sad boring life if you hate on people harmlessly enjoying life with an animal costume.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

What exactly can't Windows do how you want?

I've used both Linux (and BSD) and Windows and found it's always just a question of not searching or researching enough.
I don't know anything that Linux could do that's not possible on Windows today.

        Re: dropping windows

I use Ubuntu on my laptop and WinXP/Win7 on my desktops.

Ubuntu is great, but if you have 4GB of RAM or more, make the swap partition smaller. Otherwise, it will swap a lot more than Windows does.

If you want an easy to set up system, then Linux is not what I would recommend. It works very well as it is, but you will need to more than likely install extra drivers for graphics cards etc. and there are some annoying bugs now and then. Overall, it's more stable and faster than Windows.

i'm going to assume that most of the requirements are X related because without X you don't need much of a system for it to run fast.

            Re: dropping windows

Chrome loves to eat RAM for breakfast (4GB still isn't enough, it's a nice fast browser but uses far too much RAM), but yeah, if you're just running a CLI you should get away with 128MB with no swap.

And you don't have to install drivers on Windows??

Actually, Linux has more divers built in than Windows does. This is especially true for older hardware, that newer versions of Windows don't have drivers for.

yah tomorrow because of a bet, after i get home from work refurbing some windows machines, i will use CLI all day which is just fine cause i have lynx (CLI browser) and mocp (media on console player) installed so i can still listen to music and brows badcaps so i think i'll be good and i think i might kill X tonight just for the heck of it

                    Re: dropping windows

I pretty much use linux as it was supposed to be used...for a server. I run my fileserver on a PE 1800 /w 2 WD black 1TB linux raided drives

linux as a desktop is neat, but it still runs into problems, problems only command-line stuff will fix. True also to some point with windows too, but unlike windows, you can do pretty much everything in linux command line. Which is why I hate most linux desktops maybe with the exception of Ubuntu

wow you can run firefox on linux, and openoffice too! what about quickbooks /w UPS shipping software? awww, nope

wine will run it, and i fear that if microsoft keeps pushing tablets we might just see it!

i've used mint since ver 10 and i only had to drop to command once and thats because the windoww 7 boot repair disk decided that the linux hdd is a better boot hdd than the windows hdd on USB that it WAS supposed to replace the boot code on.
