Basic clean room for a HDD head transplant

I've never had a HDD go bad...Yet. willawake linked this site awhile back http://hddguru.com/ it is an interesting read and seems to be run by a Russian guy that suffers no fools.

A member over at AnandTech linked his home grown clean room for me and I thought some here might like a look. He did this back in 2003.

EDIT: This fella did practice on several dead HDDs before trying this repair.
He was able to remove all his files after the head transplant.

Thanks for the link to that cool software... now if I could only find a way to repair the firmware in the Maxtor 541DX and Fireball 3 drives that I have an enormous stack of at work.

Speaking of that, how would someone modify the drive descriptor to ID in the BIOS as "Merit 0010" instead of "Maxtor Fireball 3" or whatever? These drives are used in our touchscreen games and Merit found a way to mod them so you can't use an off the shelf drive to replace a failed one. You have to pay them $200+ to get a new drive, which is the same crappy model that goes bad again, and again, and again. They will usually come up as Maxtor Athena or Maxtor Ares in the BIOS and won't work at all.

Re: Basic clean room for a HDD head transplant

That is all controlled by the firmware

You could either try to hack the Firmware yourself with a HEX editor (it would probably fail since the CRC checksum would be different)

Or get the most recent firmware that is compatible with that drive... However upgrading a harddrive firmware is not a recommended procedure because they all contain maps of the bad sectors on the drive from when it was manufacturerd etc and if that info gets corrupted you will have a very unreliable drive...

But try asking the manufacturer, you might just get lucky...

There is a HDD repair tool called PC3000 - it's an IDE controller card and software. The software can be used without the card (with a software emulator) - however it's not legal. The software includes tools for various disks, including Maxtor. The Maxtor tool can change disk name too, might even be able to fix some of the dead drives (but they're often physically bad - especially the slim line ones).

I hope you can easily remove the tools when done. It looks glued together.

                Marshall stanmore multi room
                by Kezi Gamer
Hi, recently i have encountered problem with my Marshall stanmore multi room speaker, speaker itself works fine using app from my phone but knobs on actual speaker doesn't work. First thing that came up to me is that maybe something is shorted on the top board and after disassembling the speaker and checking with multimeter I could not find anything wrong, also on the panel multi, and next song button are working and nothing else. Any help is very appreciated...

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
                by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

Lithium 12v tool battery charger... no negative connection?
                by budwich
I have a drill and battery but no charger so I bought a "universal charger" 120ac in ... 12vdc out (not really universal in lithium world). Anyway it has three contacts, positive, negative and "T" (temperature sensor). I connected those contacts to the contacts on the battery. No charging happened and only the status light is on (green solid) which the label indicates "100% charged".... but the battery isn't near that at around 9v and dying. There doesn't appear to be any difference whether the battery is connected or not. I got suspicious and pulled the...

                Basic electronic knowledge resources
                by swofra
                Hey all,
I've got a few XBOX power problems but don't know much about anything concerning electronics troubleshooting outside of replacing caps. Instead of coming on here and wasting people's time being confused when they say check rectifier, transistor, resistor, etc or whatever it may be and then having to ask "what is that?", I wanted to learn and build up a knowledge base first so I'm not completely clueless and can apply the good advice people give without confusing the situation more by not knowing what i am doing.
Is there a good thread or source, either on this...
