    Are desktop computers becoming obsolete?

I have noticed that my computer repair business has declined. I wonder if more people are buying tablets and laptops than desktop computers. So, give me your opinion on what you think.

Much of my custom is from businesses and local government so apart from the odd laptop here and there there's no change. On the home customer side I'll agree with you, tablets, laptops and netbooks etc are becoming more common. What I AM finding though is that the work is changing as much as declining. One aspect is I taught myself glass replacement and general repair on tablets and have done 2 ipads, 3 smartphones and an ipod touch so far. Not much I know but the word is getting out there. You've got to move with the flow and adapt. Because of Badcaps.net I'm taking in more component level repairs that I would have passed up before. Thanks guys.

So, yes, the new wave of 'must have' goodies will impact us somewhat, you just have to ride it unless you want to do something else. I've run hundreds of miles of CAT5E in my time but thats declining in favor of wireless (except law offices where they want the 'closed' security) Maybe its high time I stopped crawling around spider filled basements anyway. Yuk !

So to answer the question - NO, not yet.

there will always be a need for hardcore gaming desktops for people. But the general person will use a laptop, or hell even a tablet to achieve email, web, social, chat, skype and whatnot.

There are some software disadvantages for tablets that are slowly going away, like printing

I think the sheeple will migrate to windows 8 and more and more arm devices are going to be sold, I still love macs but I feel a big part of apple died when jobs did. at this point I keep getting more and more into linux, where i have actually CONTROL over my system and Iam not locked into an app store, (i can't believe microsofts pushing that shit now) hopefully the desktop will survive.

Although an AIO is a desktop computer, I've seen a lot of people buying those lately (not Apple, they're beyond expensive down here). I'm also seeing notebooks in replacement of desktop systems because of "space", "wires" and similar reasons. Seems like people just don't care about having upgrade capabilities. Even worse, they don't toss the systems away when the computers break. Everyone suddenly becomes a junker or try to save their skins asking for a fortune online.

A good desktop computer is a luxury when you consider that much smaller devices have the power to do what the ordinary person needs to do on a day-to-day basis. Considering this, desktop computers are now a niche market for a declining single Western male with a disposable income, so I have to vote yes on this one.

A client of mine said that the all-in-one desktop computers are being pushed a bit too hard.
