  • Re: A cheap CFL died at home...

Here is another one, failed this morning (they do go down in pairs). Difference is, this one is almost a year old and was barely turned off, so, I guess it's exactly what mariushm says....

  • Re: A cheap CFL died at home...

Actually, I bought that CFL on Wal-Mart, but a few years ago, the government did exactly what you're saying. It was some kind of "exchange", every person was able to trade up to four ILBs, for the same amount of CFLs. Some of my other CFLs lasted a long time, I guess it was a combination of bad luck and cheap design on this one. Now stores are trying to sell LED lights down here (70 bucks each, right), but a lot of people are buying halogen bulbs.

  • Re: Are desktop computers becoming obsolete?

Although an AIO is a desktop computer, I've seen a lot of people buying those lately (not Apple, they're beyond expensive down here). I'm also seeing notebooks in replacement of desktop systems because of "space", "wires" and similar reasons. Seems like people just don't care about having upgrade capabilities. Even worse, they don't toss the systems away when the computers break. Everyone suddenly becomes a junker or try to save their skins asking for a fortune online.

Besides having a 2-month life, no, no problem, but it looks cheap all right. Maybe I have too many chinese PSUs around me poisoning my mind...

  • A cheap CFL died at home...

... just opened it up, and found what you can see in the image below (sorry about quality, can't ask much more of a feature phone). Ymin? 400v? I think I understand why this costs 4 bucks......

  • Re: Quick question about Panasonic caps

Seems like I'll be able to find some HZs locally after all ("locally" with some pepper on it, I have to travel for an hour and a half). And the Nettle2 is quite popular on the forum, everyone is pretty much having the same problem with those 8mm caps. I really hope I can bring this one back, I need a Win8 testing rig, and this little HP demon looks like a good candidate. Thanks for the answer.

  • Quick question about Panasonic caps

Hi everyone, I'm in need of 6.3v, 1800uF, 8mm diameter caps for a Nettle2 motherboard. A few local stores are selling Panasonic caps with those values and that specific diameter. Problem is, I can't find any datasheet and/or solid info about Panasonic making 8mm caps with those values. Everything I've found starts at 10mm. Should I consider those caps as fakes, or there's something I'm missing? I just want to check if I have a local alternative before placing an international order (and have a battle with customs in the process). Thanks.

  • Re: The Indestructible iMac G5 - Full Poly Mod

That motherboard looks awesome with those polys. Great work, Topcat.

  • Re: "A disk read error occured"

SATA + old XP version = problems. You should be using XP with at least integrated SP3 these days, and make sure you use IDE mode for SATA drives in the BIOS. AHCI is a nightmare under XP. Some drivers are good, but for some motherboards you still need to load separate drivers using a floppy disk (yes, a floppy disk). XP SP2 will be shot down in june. You should consider making the jump to Windows 7 if the hardware allows it, or sticking to Linux. I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 and it works really nice so far.

  • Re: Help identifying caps on this video card

Then that's it, if you had a board with those caps, those values have to work in mine. I'll give it a shot as soon as I can. Thanks, Scenic!

  • Re: Help identifying caps on this video card

(taking notes) Great! Only two more to go. One is almost hidden under the power cord for the cooler, and the other is right next to the "clock-thingie" (I don't remember the name for that). They look the same so, they can't be too far of 16V 100uF. Thanks!

  • Help identifying caps on this video card

A bit of history: When I was younger and foolish (let's say, six months ago), an old GeForce FX 5500 came into my possession. This thing had polymer caps (vents open), and smaller standard caps. I removed them, but I was ignorant of the important difference between polymer and standard caps. The old polymers said "6.3v 1000", and I used 6.3v 1000uF standard caps. Of course, the board refused to work, and I removed all the caps, including the small ones. Now I have found that board again, and I want to give it a shot, but I don't know which caps must go on this thing (I remember the 6.3v...

  • Re: Are these Samxon GT real...?

Don't worry, I won't buy them from eBay, but it's a bit weird that Samxon is not reporting 16v x 2200uF 10mm GT caps in it's datasheet. Maybe I saw an outdated version of the PDF...? Thanks.

It's an eBay Hong Kong link, shortened:

I checked the Samxon GT datasheet and I can't see any 16v 2200uF caps with a 10 milimiter diameter there, but Big Pope have these in stock too. I'm confused here...https://It's an eBay Hong Kong link,...nfused here...It's an eBay Hong Kong link, shortened:

  • What can you actually mod in a PSU besides caps?

I have noticed that several hardware parts have voltmods, pinmods, pencil mods and capacitor change/replacement, but the only thing I have found about PSUs on the net are modifications to turn an ATX PSU into a bench/lab power supply. I know it's possible to replace caps in a PSU, but I was wondering what else can you do to, well, "make it better". I'm not talking about "turn a 300W PSU into an über-monster 800W PSU", but little adjustments. "Tweaking", if you want to call it that way.

  • Re: What can you tell me about Epcos caps?

Good news: I have found a place that can get Panasonic FM, FC, FK, NHG and Nichicon PS from the UK via import. The price is... well, considerable, but this is the good stuff. I don't have anything to cap right now, so I'll have to wait until something blows up.

  • Re: What can you tell me about Epcos caps?

Thanks a lot for the info. As PCBONEZ said, Epcos caps don't seem to have a "good" ESR. I have found the datasheet for those B41856 on the pics, and have a "ESRmax" of 0.24. I believe Rubycon MCZ have something like 0.016, right? Quite a difference. I'll just keep looking. There must be quality caps somewhere down here...

  • What can you tell me about Epcos caps?

I'm just tired of finding generic caps where I live, but I've found a place that sells Epcos caps. They are like Siemens, right? Good, bad? Have someone used them on a motherboard? Any other specifics? Thanks in advance.

  • Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

Hi, I'm Lisandro and I'm writing from Argentina (that's way, way down). I have started recently to recap motherboards and video boards. Never had the chance to deal with PSUs yet, but there's always a first time. I'm sick and tired of these cheap electronic shops near my home trying to sell me generic, "dark sided" chinese caps. I hope to learn a lot about how to recognize good quality caps, and a bit more about ESR, and this forum is at the top of the list on the net. Any opinions on Siemens and Epcos for caps? Thank...
