Asus 6600GT AGP Fan Mod Question

The fan in my Asus 6600GT AGP is practically failed and annoying. sounds like scalectrix gone wrong.

so i am thinking to mod it for the moment by taking this fan

    and sticking it on top

what should i use to stick it?
do you think the fan is too much to connect directly to the card?

Re: Asus 6600GT AGP Fan Mod Question

To attach it, I would drill 2 small holes where I've marked, and use some long screws. That should be more than enough to hold it in place. For a little added security, you could use a little hot glue from the old trusty hot glue gun as well.

I would power it off the PSU, not the card power tab. I'm sure that fan will pull more current than the cheesy stock one, and I wouldn't risk burning up the card.

Looks like it shall do the trick.

I hate the proprietary HSF combos they use on those, I had to tear the OEM unit off one of my AGP cards like that and use a thrid party solution, works though.

      Good Luck!

I've got one of the, stick it in the next slot double fan, things.
Unfortunately it's also loud, but it does move air.

Re: Asus 6600GT AGP Fan Mod Question

well this fan will not be running at 12v cos its really noisy. (thats why has been sitting in the fan box). gonna get a pot.

suprisingly although the airflow is never going to be optimum sticking a fan on like that, there is good airflow coming through those fins so its gonna be an ok budget mod.

So, Will, When you blow pot thru the video fan, you watch how it travels thru the machine?
              I'm just curious.

Initially, but after a while, you don't need to watch it, you just sense its path.

I think the card's fan header will tolerate <2W easy. If the fan will fit inside the card's housing, I'd cut the fan's frame away leaving the three legs long, break the surfaces with sand paper, then bond inplace with silicone adhesive. It's working temp is 150F.

and then you transcend the airflow problem.........................

This doesn't belong here but after Will's post I feel I can say anything.

I bought a box of these at auction and really like them,
                      called the System Saver.
Powerful fan, three large MOV's, two switched sockets and one unswitched pigtail socket.
Is this a handy thing or what?

The circuitry is that of a surge suppressor... but where does the fan fit into it? Can the structure be easily mounted on a PC chassis, thus allowing the fan to behave as a case fan?

There was more than one brand and they were specifically designed to slip onto those other computers, the peach, the pear,, some kind of fruit.
I had positioned one each on top of crt monitors to blow out heat and make stand for printer stacked up on it.
The coolest was the ability to protect and control power outlets.

Looks good! the closeness of the fan to the copper HS base should ensure that airflow through the fins adjacent to it be maximised, which is a good thing.

It also means that physically, the card doesn't get any additional thickness to it, which may be an issue in certain setups.

I really thought the fan cage structure kept the bearings or sleeve lined up.

Nah! I've bonded aluminum plates to the back of frameless fans, to be fitted into Zalman 9500 heat sinks. Will's cool.

Re: Asus 6600GT AGP Fan Mod Question

                                    it seems perfectly fine.

the fan is also connected directly to the cards fan header no probs, therefore enabling software control. the only problem with that is that the software control was anyway not that great ie the only interesting part of the slider is the last 5%.

taking it a touch off 100% slows the fan down rather a lot. anyway it provides what i want namely 100% in games and inaudible in 2D.

temps in 2D are the same as stock i believe. indicating that the limitation is the heatsink because there is good air going through those fins.

the other comment i have is regarding the dremeling. i did a straight cut. a curve would have been more attractive but with my bad dremeling it would have looked very ghetto.
