Just found a bulged MCZ in a Dell Dimension 5000... Is this a common occurrence?
Bad Rubycon, too?

Re: Bad Rubycon, too?
Might have been a defective cap. It happens.
You have an ESR meter? If so, pull them all and test them just to be sure.sigpic

Re: Bad Rubycon, too?
I harvest as many bad rubycons these days as KZG's. mostly from USFF systems....but some aren't.... No cap is indestructible, given enough time and heat, the best lytics will spooge...<--- Badcaps.net Founder

Re: Bad Rubycon, too?
I'm not allowed to touch any of the systems here with the iron or ESR meter; boss says just leave it, so I will! When it goes bad in a year's time, I can simply say "I warned you..." I also found another Dell (I think Optiplex 280) with a bad Nichicon HM but with 2006 date code - not in the 2001-2004 range for manufacturing defects, so I guess it just went bad on its own too. And a power supply with two bad Fukkyuus. Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: Bad Rubycon, too?
Could it be ripple from the power supply in excess of its specs? If the PSU is failing enough. I often see "MCZ" when I hear of Rubycon failures so it has been noted before that MCZs are sensitive to heat, maybe moreso than other "good" capacitors for whatever reason.Comment

Re: Bad Rubycon, too?
A guy I know who bought a pickup truck full of Pentium 4 Dells (mostly Optiplex GX270) and spent the weekend recapping them said he was surprised to find so many failed Rubycons next to the heatsink, but they weren't nearly as bad as the Nichicons in the same locations.Comment

by momakaNormally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow.
But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though.
I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

by J_TI have a question - I have replaced the PSU on my own iMac Pro. However, when removing the motherboard I knocked of a 120 OHM 30% 0.3A small surface mount common mode inductor/filter (~0602 size) in the ethernet circuit near the female RJ45 port.
The closest match I can find on Mouser is 120 OHM common mode inductor at 100MHz - my question is this frequency correct for a motherboard? The schematic for the motherboard only provides '120 OHM 30% 0.3A' and the TDK part number does not return anything in google.
Sorry, I am not experienced hence a basic question.

by triplefourgot this tv from a friend who got a new one and didnt want to bother repairing this one.
he said it sometimes would just flash color patterns.
and sometimes it would just work
i figured it had some intermittent mainboard issue.
i stored it at home for a while before looking at it
when i plugged it in for the first time, i heard some popping noises
and then a big cloud of white smoke came out of the back of the tv!
i noticed the smoke didnt actually smell like anything. not like when an IC blows.
i unplugged it and took the back off and discovered... -
by JaneI have faulty HP ProBook 450-G2 LA-B181P - doesnot start. When connecting a charger, the LED on plug in connector blinks from yellow to blue. (I tried to search a short on mainboard.)
What is a common resistance ( to ground ) I should measure on a coil that leads to VGA chip(RT8880CGQW) ? I measure only about 9.6 Ohms. Is it normal?03-11-2025, 05:26 AM -
by ctroxtellI've got a control display for a Carrier chiller that I'm trying to understand what the common failure with these boards are. This is the board in question https://www.supplyhouse.com/Carrier-...arquee-Display all of them seem to develop a failure with the up and down arrow buttons on the right side of the display, the esc and enter keys I've never seen fail. Once these boards are plugged in they run 24/7, you used to have to press extremely hard with the end of the blunt screwdriver and you could still get the arrows to work but now it has completely stopped working. The button...
