decompile/extract the files to a thumb drive or burn the disk and use an external optical.

I've installed pfsense on plenty of shit. Get a usb cd/dvd drive

if the client has other sata ports, take it apart and take a sata drive and just install it with the drive setting outside the case

Does the thin client have a CF card slot?

If so, get a CF card (16MB min. for m0n0wall), pop it into your cardreader on your main PC and write the .img onto it using this tool.
          Use the "generic-pc-1.33.img" for m0n0wall

pfsense.. no idea.. They don't seem to provide a HDD/CF image, just a USB stick installer and a bootable CD ISO.

CF card slots in thin clients are almost always directly wired to the IDE port.

yes I know. CF is built upon ATA data transfer protocols. Nearly every time I make a real PFsense system I use one of these

It's the other way around - the pins are on the motherboard, while the plastic connector with the holes is on the flash disk unit.

That is a laptop IDE connection... odd usage though. I wonder if it standard pinout wise?

I wonder if one could get a gender changer and use it with an IDE to mini-IDE adapter and use a surrogate computer for the install?

                    OR

if I am wrong and that is a standard IDE connection, just use a gender changer and an IDE cable to have both the flash drive and a cd drive

If it's like in the pic on ebay, I've got several thin clients with the same setup. One from Igel and one from Liscon. Internally identical (Via C3 600MHz or something).

That's a standard laptop 2.5" HDD connector (with +5V) on the board. You can get adapter cables if you need them, or instead of those flash disks, plug in CF adapters.
One of my thin clients came with a 64MB flash disk (like the one in the ebay link), the other had a CF adapter with a 32MB card instead.

                      looks kinda like this one
