Hitachi GST unveils perpendicular HDDs

TOKYO - Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has started shipping
perpendicular 2.5-inch hard disk drives, seeking to break through the
capacity ceiling of longitudinal drives.
Its first 2.5-inch product family, dubbed as Travelstar 5K160, has a single
platter with 80 Gbytes of capacity, or two platters each with 40 Gbytes of
capacity. The platter's areal density is 131.5 Gbits per square
inch.
