    ITX sytems

today in a lot of freebies I recived an intel D201GLY micro-ITX board.

    specs:

    Celeron 215 (1.3ghz yonah, 512kb cache)
    1x ddr2
    SIS chipset
    SIS mirage 1 graphics
    1 pci slot
    1 ATA
    6x usb (4 headered, 2 back)
    ps/2 m/k
    parallel port
    serial port
    10/100 Lan

my question is what to do with it... it came with all the parts (org. box, I/O shield, etc.) and also had an IDE to CF adapter and an 3.5" IDE to 2.5" IDE adapter...

I have a couple of low watt PSUs, those being a uATX 200W hipro and a tiny Hipro 180W. both have the needed ATX (20 pin) and 12V connectors.

what I do not have is something to mount it in... I have a wooden silverware box, formerly used as an netbook case, but moddign that to hold it looks easier said than done.

I know they make ITX cases... however, I am a noob to ITX systems so some suggestions would be appreciated.

Get a shoe box, drill some holes in the cardboard and mount it inside. Or go buy some crap that's cheap and in a plastic box the size of what you want

already done that with a trigem lomita board and a toner box... there are pics of it in another thread. the baord since died and I still have the box, but some of the mounts are ripped out and unlike the lomita, this board is too loose.

I was not wanting to make this

as for carputers, I currently don't have a car so...

posting from it now; I temporialy stole a ram stick out of my main rig and grabbed a HDD I had with ubuntu 11.10 pre-installed. I mounted it in a mostly gutted compaq p4 case I had...

the graphics were glitch as hell... until I found a PPA with a 3rd party driver... now the graphics are nice and pretty.

          still looking for case ideas...

Get a n-th hand rackmount switch/hub from eBay... for example these ones:

            http://www.ebay.com/sch/?_nkw=3Com%2...d=308612604714

But just search for rackmount hub or rackmount switch and you'll find stuff from a few dollars up.

Your mini itx is 6.7" x 6.7" , the one above is 19″ x 11.8″ x 3″ or about 17" x 9" x 1.7" ... you can do the math from the two ethernet ports stacked ... should even fit a small power supply with a bit of luck.
Might even fit the connectors of the motherboard where the network ports are.

I have the guts of a 16 port one... but its too shallow... doh

              it's an idea alright... IDK.

if my existing server didn't work as well as it does, it would be tempting to move over the hw RAID card and 2 hdds... but I like that system as it is... plus, based on amounts of heat, i think the existing pIII uses less power anyway...

Those boards support up to 2GB RAM btw (the intel specs say 1GB, mine runs with a 2GB DDR2-667 stick)
Might be handy if you need a server with lots of RAM (which the PIII might not handle).
Mine is used as a Minecraft server. It's java based. Doesn't need much CPU grunt but one heck of a lot of RAM. Works fine and after replacing the stock 40mm fan it's quiet too.

the previous owner put a 100 ohm resistor on the the fan to take the edge off the noise.

I don't really need more server power...

                      ?

the panel and board are one package to me... if it were a fried board, it would be a different story.

if you wanted the board and panel, it might be a different story. key word being MIGHT.

do you really want the board or are you desperate for an I/O shield?

I have an indentical one somewhere IIRC... you can get them on ebay for a lot cheaper than what I would be selling the board for... its a pretty common pattern.

for exaple, the FIC AM37 uses that pattern... Emachines and HP used those boards a lot, I used to have 2 pulls (one dead, one recapped and recapped) and I still have the I/O shield.

If i find my extra I/O sheiled (not sold with the one AM37), I will send you a PM.

                            Re: ITX sytems

I have an almost identical version (the 1.1GHz one) that's why I need the panel.
That board would be perfect for a 2U or 1U minecraft server, and I'm too picky to just leave out the I/O shield or to make a cardboard one.
It doesn't seem that common as I was unable to find one at work even when I looked through the whole box!
If you can't find the I/O shield for your other one within the next few days I'd be happy to buy the entire board.
                            Thank you

they don't use the same shield.

also, I have decided to not sell the board... I may want to use it for something other than a server.

I just had an idea... I still have that semi-functional Linksys switch around here somewhere.... maybe my mobo will fit in there :P

Edit: i just realized mine is also the 1.33 version with a Celeron 215 CPU! lol! I thought it was a 1.1 but I'm not sure what I was mixing that up with... :/

Edit 2: bought a whole nother one on ebay for $25
